Everyone has those days when watching mindless television is the most appealing thing to do. My go to has always been Family Guy, as it doesn’t take a lot of brain-power to watch but is still a very well put together cartoon. Being that this Fox series has only won three awards, here are seven reasons as to why I think that this TV show is one of the best you can watch.
1. It has a good balance of smart humor and dumb humor.
Along with this being a mindless cartoon, by paying attention, you can pick up more intelligent jokes sprinkled throughout the show.
2. You never know what the plot is going to be like.
The plot for each episode is so unique that it makes for an unpredictable episode each time you watch. Plots that center around things like high school or losing a job that seem so done to death always have an unexpected twist.
3. It can get by with making fun of controversial topics.
Because Family Guy is a cartoon, it can get away with bits that would be far too cold or even gory if it was a reality show. Topics like terrorism, religion, disabilities, and sex are used for a twisted humor that makes it impossible for anyone to be offended and crosses a line that other TV series are afraid to do. They do it in a way that still has respect and grace.
4. It has jokes for adults and kids.
This element makes it a convenient show that you can watch with your whole family, given that the kids are older than 12.
5. The babies and animals can talk.
Stewie, the baby, and Brian, the pet dog, have a partners in crime type of relationship which adds an interesting dynamic to the show. The way that the animals and babies can talk is so casually and normally gives you an interesting perspective on a character that you wouldn’t have in other kinds of TV series.
6. Uses extreme stereotypes to enhance comedy.
Stereotypes like the single bachelor, the pot smoking liberal, and the depressed teenager are amplified to add a familiar but not so predictable element in the character’s makeup. It allows the audience to easily get to know the characters and understand some of what goes on in their head.
7. It makes you feel better about your relationship with your family.
While there have been plenty of heartfelt family moments throughout the series, Peter, the husband, and his constant antics are always making life harder for the rest of the family. The Griffins are an entertaining cartoon family to watch on TV, but I think everyone can appreciate their household after seeing the extreme situations this family gets put in.
