I remember the summer after my freshman year of college, all of my family asked how's college? How's Tucson? I always replied "school's good, Tucson is gross, but campus is nice," now keep in mind my only taste of Tucson outside of campus was the drive down Speedway toward the I 10 when I got picked up to go home. My opinion of Tucson was from a careless, dorm living, freshman perspective.
Sophomore year I began to discover the beauty of Tucson and all of it's eclectic quirks. Now at the conclusion of my junior year I am in love with Tucson. Here are some reasons why.
1. The sunsets.
Driving out to Gates Pass and sitting up on the mountain watching the sunset is an amazing Tucson gem.
2. The University of Arizona.
Now I might be a little biased, but having the U of A located in Tucson is kind of a big deal, Beardown!
3. The cemeteries on Oracle.
This may seem odd, but the cemeteries locate on Oracle are full of history date back to the 1800's and are full of large oak trees that shade the area and provide a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
4. La Encantada.
May seem like just an outdoor shopping center, but it houses some of Tucson's resident's favorite places like RA, Blanco, Frost and of course the only AJ's in the area.
5. University Boulevard.
Home of many UA student favorites like Frog N Firkin, Gentle Ben's (Tuesdays), Fuku (Friday fish bowls) and No Anchovies.
6. Oro Valley.
Taking a drive all the way up Oracle into Oro Valley might be the most scenic drive in Tucson, you are so close to the mountains and it is breath taking.
7. Dirtbags.
Like the sign says "a part of growing up," visit what many would consider a dive bar during day light, any Thursday or Friday night and you are sure to be entertained, it's like the 21 and over frat party.
8. Fourth Ave.
Where you can find street fairs, farmer's markets, vintage clothing shops, many unique bars and cafés and of course Lindy's on 4th, the best burger place in Tucson.
Tucson may not seem like much from the occasional passerby but if you take the time and to get to now our eclectic city you too will fall in love with it's whimsical charm.
