For anyone who has had a Christian upbringing, or has a friend who is Christian, you understand why being asked to be a confirmation sponsor or a godparent is a big deal. Such roles mean someone thinks of you a role model, that you are a person they can rely on for guidance and support throughout their lives. Essentially, they think you're the bomb.
So, when my older cousin asked me to be the Godmother of her son, you can imagine how excited I was. In the three short years I've been a godmother, not only have I learned a lot about myself, but I've also learned how to be a person other people can rely on. There are many factors that go into being a godparent and here are 7 reasons why it's awesome:
1. You have a title and bragging rights most don't have.
Phrases such as, "Well, since I'm a godmother I know this ..." or, "My godchild can do this ..." are used frequently in casual conversation.
2. It's acceptable to show off pictures of your godchild at any given time - especially when the cuteness of a baby is being discussed.
Don't try to argue with me: you know my godchild is way cuter than Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' kid. Seriously, look how cute he is! Do you want to see the other 300 pictures I have?
They hide their baby under a blanket ...
3. You have an excuse to buy gifts and toys that really aren't for them, but actually for you and your inner-child.
Because what one year old doesn't want a four-wheeler? A matching t-shirt and onesie is very necessary.

4. You discover a patience you never knew you had.
Who knew quietly listening to a toddler take 2 minutes to try to ask for apple juice would prepare you for quietly listening and comforting a crying friend?
5. No matter what mood you're in, their laugh and smile is guaranteed to brighten your day.
Everything is better and funnier when it's coming from a little kid.
6. You get to watch them grow.
Not only do you watch, but you get to be a part of it, too! From birthdays to the first day of school, you're included in everything. Even if you can't be there in person.
7. And probably the best part: you get to see your godchild whenever you want, with the added benefit of being able to leave.
At the end of the day, you get to go home and not have to worry about when nap time is or if a diaper change is needed. One full day of caring for your godchild is enough to make you realize being a parent is a full-time job you are not ready to have for another 10 or 15 years - maybe even never.
But on a serious note, if anything happens to your godchild's parents, without any reservations you are expected to put this child before yourself and ensure you give them everything they need. You may even become their legal guardian.
Therefore, always remind your godchild's parents to travel separately!
