What It's Like Living In The Wrong Decade

7 Problems Faced By People Born In The Wrong Time Period

Anyone close to me knows that I was born in the wrong time period. My wardrobe is from every decade except this one, my taste in music is ancient and my values correlate with those of my teachers and grandparents. Anyone else born in the wrong time period can relate to the following:

1. Constantly being called a hipster

The hipster style is a mix of modern and vintage attire. Whether it be the thick rimmed glasses or the fact that the majority of your clothes come from a thrift shop, the hipster style is a unique one. I am NOT a hipster I am merely nostalgic.

2. Being labeled as a nerd/mom

My best friend Sarah tells me my bell bottom jeans are mom jeans, and my history teacher from high school tells me my high wasted jeans are mom jeans. If my jeans are not the modern day skinny jeans, they are mom jeans. I just can’t win! High wasted jeans have become socially acceptable for parties, meanwhile teens in the eighties, wore high wasted jeans to school on a daily basis. If I wear high wasted jeans to class, or my bell bottoms, I get some funny looks.

3. No one cane relate to your taste in music

Believe it or not several of my peers do not know who Kurt Cobain was and have never heard of the band Nirvana. I don’t know if perhaps these figures were from too long ago or my generation is just uniformed. Recently I’ve started getting into The Cowsills. I know if my roommate walked in to me listening to them she would have a stroke over the “grandma” music.

4. Your best friends are your teachers

I’ve always been more mature than my peers which has led me to very meaningful relationships with my teachers. My teachers and I will reminisce on the “good ole days” as if I lived in them. “You get it,” they’ll say to me. No, I don’t get it, but I wish I was around long enough to.

5. Feeling like you missed out on the "best" people

Elvis was the king of rock and roll, Kennedy was the best president and Dr. King was the most influential Civil Rights activist. Now, all are politicians are morons, “good music” is defined as anything degrading women and instead of preaching love and compassion, like MLK, cities are being burned down for equal rights. We need these men now more than ever, but they are gone and shall never return..and I missed them.

6. Feminists will jump down your throat

Let this image burn into your brain, because people do not embrace each other like this anymore. I want a man to hold the door for me, pull out my chair and hold me like John Wayne. That’s not oppression, that’s respect. Women are so focused on their independence and being equal to men that they don’t recall chivalry. No, I don’t want to be treated like a doll or have a man neglect my intellectual abilities. But maybe going back to a time when men respected women wouldn’t be so bad.

7. Your beliefs and values align with those of senior citizens

Do you know who you’ll find in church? Old people and me. Part of the reason so many elderly people are found in church, is because when they were young, going to mass regularly was a societal norm, as was eating dinner with your family and playing baseball with your dad. Now families get takeout, kids play with iPads and church is almost like another planet.

It breaks my heart that we are no longer living in the good ole days. I am confident this can change, if more people understand the past and allow it to better the future.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
