7 Lessons I Learned From My Brother

When someone asks me who my best friend is, I immediately think of my brother. More times than not, our sibling(s) are there for us, no matter what. They help us get back up after falling down, no matter how low the fall may be. They guide us to stay on the right path. They teach us lessons and give superb advice. They protect you, always. They love you.

After my brother went to college, I found myself realizing how often I take people for granted, especially my family. Though I’ve learned so much from him, there are a few lessons that I have learned that I will take with me wherever I go.

1. You can’t take life too seriously.

If there’s anything to note about my brother, it’s that he’s possibly the biggest comedian I know. Everything that happens, whether good or bad, he turns into a joke, even it’s the stupidest thing in the world. He constantly reminds me that I can’t always take everything to heart and literal. It’s important to let loose and laugh/live a little.

2. Embrace the challenges God sends your way.

We’re constantly facing problems/struggles/hurdles. I started embracing challenges when I saw my brother accepting them with eagerness. His courage and bravery inspire me to take whatever happens and make the best out of it. If God sent it our way, we were more than likely meant to handle it. So, I mean, I might as well go for it, amirite??

3. Cherish all of the good moments.

Along with those struggles, we’re fortunate enough to have high moments as well. Things could always be worse. Brotha never fails to remind me that I could have it worse than someone else.

4. Always, always pray.

The most important lesson I will take from him is to pray. Prayer and faith are two key essentials to success and guidance in life. Anytime I’m with bro, I always get the opportunity to just talk to him about how blessed we are and how awesome it is to see God work in mysterious ways.

5. Support each other.

I don’t think there has been a moment, ever, in which I didn’t have my brother’s support. Every challenge I’ve faced, every happy moment I’ve experienced, every questionable situation I’ve been in, I’ve ALWAYS had my brother’s support, which is the biggest blessing of all. He often reminds me to appreciate others and support them because respect goes a long way.

6. Stay humble.

Staying humble and respectful equates to courteous and considerate individuals. Though we should all be considerate, we sometimes fall short of this goal. My brother is always helping others while keeping himself grounded. No one likes a conceited or haughty person. Life is always better with more respect and consideration.

7. Always, always engage in shenanigans!

What would siblings be if they didn’t do something foolish or silly every once in a while? It’s so important to have your partner-in-crime even if you’re in your mid-20s. Shenanigans will ALWAYS be top priority.

Broski, thanks for everything. Thanks for being my role model. Thanks for jamming to 1D with me. Thanks for making my life 10x better with our stupid inside jokes. Thank you for being you.

Xoxo,

The Lucky Little Sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
