To get through college debt free (or to help pay the load of student loans), it is beneficial for students to work during college. But balancing a full-time course load and a job is difficult. Most students need a part-time job to be able to balance school and work.

There are numerous part-time job opportunities available for students, but you might be surprised how many opportunities are available to students at your very own IU South Bend! Getting a job at your own school limits commuting time, saves gas money and gives more options for a student's class schedule - less time commuting, more time for school!

With a new semester just around the bend, now is the perfect time to apply for a position (Hint: a major tip for getting a position is to become eligible for work study before applying).

1. Library Assistant

The Schurz Library not only employs reference librarians, but also student assistants. These student workers do various tasks, from assisting patrons at the desk to pulling holds and shelving books. Students can work in different positions such as in Reference, Circulation, Web Services, Government Publications, Archives, etc. A student position is also available in the Education Resource Commons in the Education and Arts Building. Applications can be picked up in the library.

2. Writers' Room Tutor

The Writers' Room provides free tutoring services to students in the area of writing. Students can bring papers in for advice and help from tutors. Student with skills in these areas can apply to become a Writers' Room Tutor. Students must have a grade of B or higher in the course in which they desire to tutor (If you want to tutor in W131, you must have a 3.0 grade or higher in that class). The actual application (which can be downloaded on this page) states that applications must be submitted in hard copy to the fourth floor of the Schurz Library. The application also says that applicants must submit a sample writing piece. Furthermore, they must have a professor submit a recommendation form.

3. Math or Science Tutor

The Academic Centers for Excellence also provides free math and science tutoring for students. Students proficient in math or science can apply to become math or science tutors. As with a Writers' Room Tutor, applicants must have a grade of a B or higher in the class that the applicant wishes to tutor. A letter of recommendation by a professor must be also be provided.

4. Student Activities Center Student Faculty

The Student Activities Center not only provides free access for students with an IUSB photo ID, but it also employs students. Student faculty fulfill clerk-like duties such as checking in patrons to the center and answering phone calls. The job description says that a benefit of this job is that it has flexible scheduling. This makes it ideal for a full-time college student. Applications can be downloaded and then need to be submitted in hard copy format to the front desk of the SAC.

5. Bookstore Student Worker

IUSB’s bookstore, located in Northside Hall, is open semester-round. It employs students as clerks to help patrons find, return or sell back textbooks. According to their Facebook page, the bookstore is currently looking for employees (for the new school year), so get on this opportunity! The application is submitted online.

6. Dining Services Worker

Campus dining services, the Grille and SubConnection, employ IUSB students. Jobs at these places offer a flexible working schedule for busy students. Marketing students: dining services is currently hiring a student marketing intern. Applicants can stop by any campus restaurant directly for job opportunities.

7. Group Orientation leader

This position is a temporary summer job. Student Orientation leaders are assigned—along with a faculty adviser—to a group of incoming freshmen to help guide them through orientation. It is an excellent position for students who enjoy mentoring and would like to make some extra cash during the summer. New Student Orientation take place usually either Friday or Saturday and last from about 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. With the summer ending, this position will be able in the summer of 2017. Last year, the “Daily Titan” newsletter alerted students that applications were being accepted. Check your email near the end of the spring semester for this alert which, if it follows the criteria of last year, will have a link to an online application.

8. Producer or Crew Member

Titan Productions is a student organization that organizes events for students on and off campus. They sponsor fun events such as movie showings. They are currently looking for new employees (students must be work study eligible) for the fall semester. If you are talented at running and organizing fun and engaging events, contact mmostell@iusb.edu for more information about these positions. You'll not only be having fun and making money, but also gaining great marketing and planning experience!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
