A new year brings hope and a fresh start to make a change that will positively affect your life. The best way to start a new year is to adopt an optimistic mentality and strive to be the best version of yourself. Over 50 percent of Americans declare to make some type of change in their regular routine, whether it is losing weight, exercising regularly or saving money. It's wonderful to set goals for yourself but if you're like most of us, those new year's resolutions slowly turn into setbacks and we lose the motivation to make those changes. Let's beat the odds for 2016 and follow through with our goals. Below are several ways to help you stick to your New Year's resolutions.
1. Be specific when deciding on a resolution.
Put some thought into a change that you want to make for yourself. Instead of resolving to "cook more in 2016," resolve to try out one new recipe per week. This way, you have a specific resolution and a plan for how to start incorporating that goal into your schedule.
2. Schedule time to work on your resolution.
We write down due dates and assignments for class in our planners, so why not use this method for resolutions as well? Make a point to schedule a specific time to work on your resolutions.
3. Be determined.
Instead of saying, "I want to" or "I plan to" when it comes to a resolution, change your mindset to "I am." Decide on the real reasoning behind your goals and strive to make that change in your life. Effort and determination go a long way.
4. Make visual reminders.
For me personally, if I write down a sticky note or place a reminder on my bulletin board, I can easily remember things. Make several reminders and place them in areas where you spend a lot of your down time. This is another great tactic to use when striving to work on your resolutions.
5. Complete resolutions with a friend.
Choose a resolution that you and a friend can work on together. Having a support system while making changes in your life provides you with motivation and someone to help keep you accountable.
6. Utilize technology.
Most people always have their phone or laptop nearby. Technology is a great tool for daily or weekly resolutions. Set alarms as well as use the reminders function for your online calendar to help keep you on track to complete your goals.
7. Celebrate milestones.
Treat yourself! Set up a reward system for your accomplishments. It's always more motivating if you have something to look forward to once you complete your goal.
