The time has come for us all to go back to school, but for many of us, a new journey is about to begin. Freshman year of college is going to be a slap in the face to many people, but Shonda Rhimes does a wonderful job of providing encouragement on how to handle this transition through her hit show, "Grey's Anatomy."
1. "At some point, you just have to let go, move on. Because no matter how painful it is, it's the only way we grow." Meredith Grey
Meredith does a wonderful job at showing that even though moving away from your friends and family is going to hurt, the sooner you move on, the easier it will be to let go. College is a great opportunity to go out, meet new people and make new friends. If you continue to dwell on the friends and family that are missing, you are not going to be able to make the most of your time there.
2. "There are moments... moments that, in a split second, your life changes forever, and before you know it... you're somewhere else." Derek Shepherd
College is going to unlock so many different doors and opportunities for you take advantage of every single day. Without taking advantage of them, you are going to be the same old person you were when you started college, and who wants to be a 22-year-old acting like a teenager?
3. "You just don't give up. It's lame. You're not a quitter. That's not who you are." Alex Karev
There are going to be times when you think college isn't for you. Whether it is on move-in day, the first day of class, or the first F you get on an assignment, you are going to want to give up. Don't do it. You will regret it forever if you gave up on something that has the potential to change your life forever.
4. "Also, the automatic paper towel thingy won't recognize me as a person." Christina Yang
Sometimes, it is going to feel as if you are invisible. More than likely, you are going to college on a campus with 4,000+ students, and it is going to be easy to be looked over. Do not take it too personal. It isn't that people don't want to acknowledge you, it's just that it becomes hard to give everyone that same amount of attention. You're still a person, I promise, even if the "paper towel thingy" makes you feel like you aren't.
5. "You did a terrible thing. That doesn't make you a terrible person." Miranda Bailey
Odds are you are going to make plenty of mistakes your freshman year of college, some that you may never want to speak of again. We all make mistakes, that is going to happen, but your mistakes do not define you. Freshman year is going to bring on many moments that you do not know what to do, and you might end up regretting the way you handled it, but it does not make you a bad person.
6. "Don't spend all your time wondering what you are or who you like or whether it is right for you or wrong for you. Just let yourself be happy." Callie Torres
Freshman year is not the time to decide exactly what you are going to do with your life after college. It is the time to try different things until you find your passion, but there is no need to stress about it. Stress is allowed if you are in the your first semester of senior year and have no idea what you are going to do with your life. That is when you can stress, but freshman year is your time to get used to college school work and the environment, so just be happy.
7. "It's like we're on a train and it's going 200 miles per hour and it would be so nice just to get off." George O'Malley
Although college is nothing like high school, it will probably be the fastest four years of your life, just like high school. Savor every single moment that you have during your freshman year (and the rest of college, for that matter). Go to every event available. Rush, even if you aren't planning on actually joining a sorority. Stay up late with your friends and go on midnight food runs. Take advantage of every single minute you have in college because once you have that diploma, the real world will immediately take over.
