7 Things I Learned My First Week of College

You'll get the hang of things eventually...

7 Things I Learned My First Week of College

FYI, I'm the freshest freshman out there. I've been asked at least twice a day if I graduated high school early because I look 14. I'm the epitome of the college infant, and I'm dang proud of it. So here's a lovely little list of 7 things I've learned this first week.

1. Call Your Parents

I've always been one of those "I can do it myself" types, and as I've gotten older, it's translated into being almost too independent. I actually enjoy doing most things for myself. If I can do it, chances are I'm sure as heck gonna try. Flash forward to my first week of college and I've literally texted them so many times like "GUESS WHAT? I MADE FRIENDS!!!", "Do you remember where that dumpster was?" or most recently, "OMG why is Zyrtec so expensive?? I cannot pay $34 for this." Everyone I know gave me the same piece of advice for college, "call your parents". But seriously, do it. I had a 16-minute convo with my parents about random topics today and it was really nice. Go call your parents.

2. Is It Really a "No-No"?

I may or may not have snuck a mini fridge into my dorm on the third day of college, but most RA's are super nice as long as you're nice and aren't doing anything illegal. I say most because the man who let my Panera delivery dude in was NOT nice. Not my fault that TXST is full of construction. He was just jelly that I got mac and cheese and he didn't, but I digress. Go ahead, sneak that mini fridge in gurl.

3. Construction

Who in the actual heck decided to do construction with 37,000 students on campus? I mean sure they don't all live on campus, but still. Do we need to be building/remodeling everywhere??? I guarantee that you are not the only one confused by construction on campus, and aren't the first to accidentally go into a one-way street the wrong way, or turn around once you realize that you ended up smack dab in the middle of a construction zone. Pro-Tip: Google maps is C-R-A-P when your university is doing construction. You're better off paying attention to road closure signs and navigating with a pal.

4. Froomies

I'm the type of girl who loves to make new friends, so I didn't want to just be friends with my roomies. I was totally prepared to never be in my dorm, and always be off hanging out with new pals. But after meeting the sweetest roomies ever, it was really nice to stay in, order a pizza, and watch Big Brother with three of the sweetest girls I've ever met. Don't underestimate the possibility of really solid friendships with your roomies!

5. Over-Involvement

We've all been told to "get involved" since orientation. No one but my mom has said a dang thing about over involvement. It's possible!! Don't over commit yourself to a million clubs, student ministries, or organizations. If you're like me, everything on campus sounds super fun and fantastic, but as I learned recently, I can't do it all! Pick 2 or 3 things to be involved in, and you'll have so much more fun than trying to do it all.

6. Nerdy is Kewl

Now, I'm not your stereotypical Big Bang Theory nerd. I don't know a dang thing about Star Wars (sorry Seth), I love sports, heck I'm taking a class dedicated to baseball, and math is my worst subject, but apparently being an honors student makes me an overachieving nerd. And this overachieving nerd is nerdy and proud. Earlier class registration, smaller class sizes, and independent study options make me one happy little nerd. Check out your university's honors options, they're so worth it!!

7. Have FUN!!!!!!

I've heard so many people talking about being stressed out or homesick. But this is college! We're supposed to be celebrating the fact that we were somehow smart enough to make it out of high school and live on our own!! Independence is fun! Go make friends, find cool university events, watch Netflix till 2 am!!! I've been in college for a whole week, and I've made a ton of friends, bought tickets to ACL (come hang w/ my pals & I at weekend 2), snuck a fridge into my dorm -- I'm SO proud of that, and a ton of other wacky adventures!! :-)))

You probably already knew all of these things and just want this freshman newb to shut the heck up but sorry, I absolutely love college, GO BOBCATS!!!!!!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
