If your childhood was anything like mine, Disney was a big part of your life. You spent your days watching VHS tapes of your favorite films, you had at least one Mickey Mouse stuffed animal, and trips to Disney World were hands down the best vacations. As we transition into adulthood, it might seem as if the magic of Disney will be left behind. The truth is, we just get to look at it from a new perspective. Here are seven Disney songs to rediscover as young adults, enjoy!
1. "Go the Distance" -- from "Hercules"
As young adults, we are set on a quest to figure out who we are and what our purpose is in the world. That destiny begins with a step forward -- going to college, moving out, finding a job. Sometimes we aren't sure where we are going, but if we stay strong, we will find our way.
2. "Reflection" -- from "Mulan"
Figuring out who you are can be hard, especially when you become critical of yourself. We let the pressures and expectations of others dictate our future. "How should I look?" "What job should I pursue?" "What will everyone think of me?" The only person you need to please is yourself. Take a look at your reflection and see who you really are.
3. "Bare Necessities" -- from "The Jungle Book"
In a world filled with iPhones, entertainment, commercialization, and materialism, we can let the amount of stuff we have take over our lives. We probably shouldn't eat ants from under rocks or lazily float down the river all day. We can, however, remember that the simplicities of life can be enough.
4. "Hakuna Matata" -- from "The Lion King"
While "no worries for the rest of your days" may seem impossible, that doesn't stop us from trying to live a low stress life. We'll always have homework to do, job applications to fill out, and bills to pay, but taking time for ourselves and maintaining our physical and mental well-being are more important. Thanks for the reminder, Timon and Pumbaa!
5. "Colors of the Wind" -- from Pocahontas
Too often we are blinded by ignorance, hatred, and selfishness. We turn our heads away from different people, different believes, and different views. Part of growing up is learning to accept what is different and living harmoniously with the world. We need to open our eyes to new perspectives and learn to "paint with all the colors of the wind."
6. "Let's Go Fly a Kite" -- from "Mary Poppins"
With adulthood come adult responsibilities. But that doesn't mean we should let go of our childhood spirit! No matter our age, we are all capable of having fun. Like Walt Disney once said, "adults are only kids grown up, anyway."
7. "When You Wish Upon a Star" -- from "Pinocchio"
If there is one lesson encompassed in Disney, it is that our heart will always hold the answers. We may be growing up, but that doesn't mean we stop dreaming.
