Leaves are crunching beneath the heel of riding boots and the aroma of pumpkin flavored anything (and everything) fills the air, letting us all know fall is finally here. In my book, October is the epitome of fall; 31 days of cozy sweaters, bonfires, and pure bliss. Those who know me know that October is my favorite month and Halloween is my favorite holiday. What 19-year-old is so passionate about a holiday that doesn't involve presents? Even though I no longer partake in the act of trick or treating, the nostalgia of candy-filled pillowcases remains in my mind. For those of you who are less excited about Halloween or are looking for a way to get in the holiday spirit, I recommend watching at least one (if not all) of these classic movies.
1. "Halloweentown" (1998)
This may be hands down my favorite movie in the history of forever. The plot of how a seemingly average girl could possess magical witch powers that she then uses to save the world is one I really connect with on a personal level. As if one movie isn't enough, there are technically four parts in the Halloweentown series, although the fourth one I don't like to count because all of the sudden Kimberly J Brown isn't Marnie and I'm still bitter.
Where to watch: Disney Channel
2. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993)
This is a classic Tim Burton film that doubles as a Christmas and Halloween time movie. The soundtrack is so dope that there's even a dance to it on one of the Just Dance games.
Where to watch: Netflix, ABC Family
3. "Beetlejuice" (1988)
Young Alec Baldwin, need I say more?
Where to watch: ABC Family
4. "The Ring" (2002)
I'm a big fan of scary movies and what better time to watch them than Halloween? Many of the other movies on here are light-hearted and more reminiscent, but "The Ring" had to be on this list. You may need to sleep with a nightlight (or a jack-o-lantern) in your room after watching this one.
Unfortunately, this one isn't available on Netflix and isn't on ABC Family's lineup. If you want to watch this one you're going to have to rent it (or watch it on VHS, but then you'll only have seven days to live...)
5. "Coraline" (2009)
This is another claymation movie similar to "The Nightmare Before Christmas," but, in my opinion, this film is slightly creepier. It is based on the book by Neil Gaiman (which I highly recommend), about a girl who craves attention from her always-busy parents. When she finds a secret passage to an alternate world, the movie becomes a typical case of "be careful what you wish for."
Where to watch: ABC Family
6. "The Addam's Family" (1991)
Everything about this movie screams Halloween. It's funny with creepy undertones, which makes it a perfect film to watch in the month of October. Some of my favorites quotes come from this movie, as seen below.
Where to watch: Netflix, ABC Family
7. "Hocus Pocus" (1993)
Such a '90s movie, Hocus Pocus will never not be considered entertaining. There's a talking black cat and a coven of evil witches who are brought back from the dead and attempt to steal the local children's souls so they can become immortal. Nbd or anything but SJP is one of the witches.
