7 of the Best Things To Do In Los Angeles

You’ve already done all the cheesy tourist stuff with your family.

Sure, you can visit the Walk of Fame, eat at Mel’s Drive-In or take a selfie with a wax figure. And I’m almost positive that your roommate took you to Urth Caffé that one time. But here’s some stuff you’re really missing out on in the City of Angels.

1. Get brunch.

Mmmm, brunch. I know the breakfast-lunch hybrid of deliciousness has become a total buzzword over the past couple of years, but that’s because it’s perfect in both timing and meal variety. See also: day drinking.

Visit Blu Jam Café on Melrose Avenue and order the eggs benedict with smoked salmon or fluffy waffles the size of your face. Either way, you’re winning. Speaking of Melrose….

2. Hunt for amazing vintage clothing.

Originally a punk rock hotspot in the early 80s, Melrose has maintained its status as the place to find off-the-wall clothing, shoes, and accessories. My favorites are Wasteland, a consignment store, and American Vintage, which has amazing hidden gems every time I go. Who doesn’t need a fringed leather jacket?!

3. Have a cup of coffee that’s #perfect.

As you can tell, I’m a little obsessed with Melrose. Work your way down the strip and stop at Alfred’s Coffee, an Instagram favorite with kitschy décor, designer cup sleeves (seriously) and very attractive baristas. You know those shirts that say “But first, coffee”? That started here.

4. Buy records at Amoeba.

Located on Sunset Boulevard, Amoeba Records is a magical place: rows and rows of vinyl as far as the eye can see. Spotify is cool and all, but nothing in the world beats the sound of an LP. Dust off that record player and stock up on your favorite artists, or ask the staff for recommendations – some of my most cherished albums have been discovered this way.

5. Visit a museum.

It has been said that art can be found in anything, and in Los Angeles, it can be found everywhere. Even in the rugged concrete, local artists blast stencils and wheatpaste images over construction sites. If street art isn’t your style, check out MoMA–Museum of Modern Art–or the L.A. County Museum of Art. Spend the day immersing yourself in front of the classics, as well as engaging in the newest exhibits. They also usually offer student discounts or discounts for Los Angeles County residents. Score.

6. Have a cheesy celebrity sighting.

The Grove is a super fancy-pants shopping center located right off of Fairfax Avenue. Visit on a weekday and you’ll see someone, almost guaranteed. It has a Main Street of Disneyland feel, with a pretty stellar fountain show in the heart of it and plenty of places to shop. Its hidden gem is the farmer’s market: rows and rows of stalls with delicious food, drinks, and knick-knacks. It’s tucked away just enough to give you a small escape from the hectic vibe of Los Angeles. Stop by Coffee Corner on your way out and get a tall cup of herbed lemonade… the best.

7. Catch a show.

Whether it’s The Wiltern, Fonda or Staples Center, L.A. is a mecca of musical wonder. There’s always someone to see, so why not take a chance, see who’s playing in the coming month and drop some bills on a ticket? At least you’ll have a story, and more importantly, you’re supporting the arts.

This list is something that will never really end, and that’s what’s so beautiful about this city: there is always something to do and see. Take my steps as a starting point, and choose your own adventure–just don’t forget to take photos along the way.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
