Seven Things That Are Amazing To People Who Went To Boarding School

That are average to everyone else in the rest of the world.

For someone who loves routine, boarding school life is amazing. Everything you do is scheduled and there is rarely time for spontaneity. After a while, it can get a little monotonous, but that's when you start to value the little things so much more. Some may think attending a boarding school must be so boring if these are the things that make the students happy, but these are truly seven great things that I no longer take for granted.

1. Wearing Shorts.

You never think of wearing shorts as a luxury until you are no longer able to do so. A girl gets tired of wearing dresses. And the poor guys -- they had to suffer wearing pants for three years until they reached the elite senior privilege of sporting shorts. A rough world we live in when the kids of tomorrow can't even wear shorts.

2. Delivery Service.

A wonderful magnificence that we have all been exposed to. God bless the delivery man bringing you $73 worth of Chinese Food at 2 p.m. on a Sunday when you are confined on campus and you're already hungry again after the three plates of food you had at brunch an hour ago.

3. Staying out until 10:00 p.m.

A totally average thing. 10 p.m. is child's play, basically mid-day for a college student. But when you get to stay out until 10 p.m. on a Saturday night at boarding school, that's three and a half more hours of socializing that you just don't have time for on a weekday.

4. Visiting Family.

When family comes to visit at college, it tends to mean stress and exhaustion, but at boarding school, it means going off campus. And eating at a real restaurant!

5. Away Games.

Similar to family visiting, away games mean going off campus. AND a chance of going to get food, if you can pull out the win.

6. School Breaks.

We all love school breaks, duh. It's probably one of the few above average things on this list. But multiply your love for winter and spring break by four and that's what you get at boarding school. Not one, not two, but FOUR weeks of break. A true gift that I didn't appreciate fully at the time and now regret because I will never have that much time off again.

7. Waffles

If you haven't realized it yet, students at boarding schools get excited about few things but food. More specifically, free food. Or food that you paid for through your tuition (same thing, though). I will wait in line for nothing. At my college, I get a salad every single day for lunch, because there is never a line at the salad bar. I detest wasting my time in lines. With that being said, when I was at boarding school, I once waited over 40 minutes in line in the dining hall for a damn waffle. B*tches love waffles.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
