Walking to classes can be very boring, especially walking across campus without music. Here's a list of seven artists currently on my playlist. I hope you find a new artist that maybe you haven't heard of before!
1. Leon Bridges
A Fort Worth native, Bridges brings back traditional R&B in a way that makes it hard to get it out of your head. In fact, he reportedly recorded his debut album, Coming Home, on tapes rather than digitally. Bridges began his singing career at open-mic nights around Fort Worth while working as a dishwasher. He brings back the old-day feel of rhythm and blues that hasn't been heard in years. Coming Home is one of the most interesting debut albums that I've ever heard, and I look forward to whatever he does next.
2. Twenty One Pilots
While Twenty One Pilots is not necessarily a "new" band, they're one of the most diverse and musically advanced artists on the radio right now. With their hit single "Tear in My Heart", they establish their ability to make fun, summer music. Other songs on their second album, Blurryface, however, delve deeper into other categories like the current state of the music industry, depression, and staying true to yourself. None of the songs sound like anything else you've ever heard, let alone sound like they belong on an album together. Blurryface is one of my top albums that came out in 2015.
3. 3. Halsey
At the young age of 20, Halsey has made a name for herself. She reportedly dated Matt Healy from The 1975, she's close with Josh Dunn from Twenty One Pilots, and that's just her personal life. Her debut album, Badlands, is #4 on the Billboard Top 100. She's a great mix of Lorde and Taylor Swift, but she's way more crass than Taylor and less vague than Lorde. Badlands is the perfect album for a road trip, because it's hit after hit without stopping. Halsey is just starting her career, but having an album at #4 and supporting The Weeknd on a tour are just previews of what's to come from this New Jersey native.
4. CHRVCHES
Like Twenty One Pilots, CHRVCHES have exploded on the Alternative/Indie Rock scene. Their music is reminiscent of 80s synth pop, and the energy this band puts out at their shows is incredible. With a second album coming out soon that's definitely worth a listen, the Scottish trio is headed straight for the top — again
5. Hayley Kiyoko
You might recognize her from "Lemonade Mouth" (aka the only good recent Disney movie), but Hayley Kiyoko isn't hiding behind Disney anymore. She's branching out — and doing a great job of it. With only an EP out (This Side of Paradise), Kiyoko is doing excellent. She has a loyal following on social media, and she's playing Aja in the upcoming "Jem and the Holograms." Her music is definitely fun, a bit like 80s pop, and a tiny bit risque (see "Girls Like Girls"). She's definitely an artist to watch, especially if she ever releases an album.
6. Best Coast
Best Coast is one of my favorite bands, and has been since I was a sophomore in high school. Seeing the Californian duo live blew my mind, and I've been obsessed with them every since. Sure, this is one of the starter bands for surf pop punk and some people have known about them for forever, but their new album California Nights is a transformative album. It's the Best Coast that I fell in love with. Give them a listen if you love feeling like it's summer and you're in California.
7. 7. Daughter
I'm a huge fan of lyrics. I can't really appreciate a song until I know what it's saying. Daughter has some of the most profound lyrics I've heard in a while. The English indie rock group has gained popularity, but they only have one album out. Daughter has the perfect music for a rainy day, or if you're just feeling existential.Music is something that I find so interesting because there's something for everyone. Is there any artist I left off my list that you're into?
