Before I left for school I was so nervous about being away from my boyfriend of 2 years. Having graduated from the same high school and living only 10 minutes apart, I was nervous how I would do on my own. Being separated from someone important to you can be very hard and at sometimes scary. Now after my first semester of college I realize a long distance relationship isn't something to fear. Here are a few advantages about long distance relationships I learned this semester!
1. You learn how to be independent.
Not having your significant other right next to you all the time can help each of you grow in your own way to become independent and understand that you can do things on your own because you are strong.
2. Having "You" time.
In a long term relationship, it is still important to find and do things you enjoy. Distance makes it a little bit easier when it comes to this. You have some time to explore new hobbies or interests that will make you happy.
3. Always having something to look forward to.
When you are having a particularly long week knowing that you get to see one of your favorite people at the end or even in a few days can help that week pass and make the days seem a bit brighter.
4. Learning how to communicate with each other.
When communicating through the phone, it can sometimes be hard to understand what someone is saying. You cant rely on their body language to give you any hints so sometimes communication isn't always the easiest. After a few months it becomes easier to listen and respond to your significant other.
5. Appreciating your relationship more.
By seeing each other everyday before my boyfriend and I both went off to college, I think we took the time of our relationship for granted. When you don't see someone everyday you realize how luck you are to have your significant other.
6. Never running out of things to say.
Being together 24/7 can make conversations boring. With a little bit of distance between you and your significant other it can be easier to talk about new things that happened during your days apart. Conversations will never be boring!
7. Knowing if you survive this you can survive anything.
After surviving the distance, multiple phone dates, and long weeks apart you can have confidence that through all these trials your relationship is stronger than before and can handle just about anything.
