Internships give you great experience. You get your foot in the door of your chosen field, and you get a feel for working 9 to 5. But if you're like I am, you haven't woken up before noon since high school. (Thank you college for allowing me to start my day at 2 p.m.)
Here's how to survive the early mornings, coffee runs and public transportation.
1. Bring coffee.
Your 6 a.m. alarm goes off way earlier than you'd like, but buying Starbucks every day adds up. Bring your own coffee instead.
2. Dress comfortably.
You'll most likely be sitting at a desk all day. Don't wear a dress that's too tight or shoes that give you blisters.
3. Make friends with David (or whomever).
Your cubicle neighbor is your friend. Instead of sitting in awkward silence all day long like I did my first day, talk with your co-workers. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
4. Ask for things to do.
Your company isn't used to having you around all the time. They're busy completing their own tasks. Remind them when you've finished your assignments, or you'll end up writing blog posts for The Odyssey.
5. Work hard at your assignments.
You're there to impress the company. You want a job after graduation. Your internship can provide a great reference for your résumé.
6. Bring a food.
You'll be amazed how hungry you are. You're basically at work for all three meals!
7. Research the surrounding area.
Public transportation in a big city, like Chicago, can be confusing. Trust me. I walked a mile in the wrong direction on my first day. Leave early so you arrive on time.
Remember first impressions are everything. You're only there for 10 weeks, so make the most of it.
Happy working!
