Women’s colleges put out some of the most phenomenal women. From congresswomen to actresses to athletes to activists, you name it, we are it. Take a look at some of the women’s college alums who have been killing it lately.
1. Hillary Clinton
Obviously, I had to put Hillary Clinton on this list. A 1969 alum of Wellesley College, she worked her way up in politics after graduating from Law School. She’s been a congresswoman, Secretary of State and is currently in the running for presidential office (another fun fact, the first female Secretary of State was a Wellesley alum too). Whether you like her politics or not, you have to give it to Hillary – she is definitely killin’ it.
2. Celia Weston
I may be biased on this one, because Celia is both an alum of my school, Salem College. You may have seen her without realizing it, as she’s been in dozens of productions like Hulk, American Horror Story: Freak Show, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Knight and Day, The Intern and Modern Family. She’s been Tony-nominated and nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her work in Dead Man Walking. I’ve also met her personally and she’s the sweetest person ever. I’m proud to call her a Salem Sister, because she is KILLING IT.
3. Jennifer Nettles
You know that gorgeous blonde country singer who continues to crush it song after song? Yep, she’s a women’s college alum. She calls Agnes Scott College her alma mater and can claim that she’s worked with Bon Jovi (She’s the female vocals on the country version of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”). She’s also acted with Dolly Parton, so there’s that. She claims 15 awards, includes 3 Grammy’s. She gives any aspiring young female vocalist hope because she is slaying the country music world.
4. Judith McGrath
If you’re looking for a boss businesswoman, Judith is your lady. An alum of Cedar Crest College, she worked as CEO and Chairwoman of MTV Networks from 2004 to 2011. Yes, that includes MTV, MTV2, VH-1, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, TV Land and Logo. She is currently on the Board of Directors of Amazon. Need a role model in the business world? You can’t go wrong with Judith because she has made it her b*tch.
5. Ann Compton
You’ve probably seen and heard Ann before – After graduating Hollins College (now Hollins University), she made her way to be a White House Correspondent for ABC News Radio, where she worked until she retired after 41 years. She’s a former president of the White House Correspondents Association and has been inducted into both the Journalism Hall of Fame by the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Radio Hall of Fame. We’ve all got to hand it to Ann – she’s the kind of woman we hope to be. She spent her whole career kicking a** and taking names.
6. Susan Kare
Susan graduated from Mount Holyoke College, then promptly began dominating the tech world. She designed many of the original interface elements for Apple Macintosh, then worked as Creative Director at NeXt, the company Steve Jobs founded after leaving Apple. You can still see evolutions of her work in certain applications on Macs like the Grabber tool, Lasso and Paint Bucket. The Museum of Modern Art store in NYC even carries stationary featuring her designs. She currently runs a digital design practice. Definition of killing it, right here.
These are just a few of the extraordinary women who have graduated from women’s colleges (And I’m sorry to any schools I didn’t mention – there’s just too many of us!). And there are so many more incredible alums out there. You can’t find Wikipedia Pages on hundreds of activists, doctors, police officers, journalists and artists who are out there, saving the world on a daily basis.
So if you have any doubts as to whether a women’s college education is worth it, I advise you to simply Google “women’s college alumnae” and see how amazing you can become when you have an institution that helps you become the strongest version of yourself and thousands of sisters standing behind you, supporting you every step of the way.
