National Girlfriend's Day is a celebration of the important women in your life! When I was brainstorming ideas for an article this week, I was inspired to pay tribute to some of my spiritual girlfriends! Here are my six "girlfriends" absolutely slaying the game right now.

Disclaimer: This list is not comprehensive. There are so many more people I’d love to include and I’m always looking for more people so feel free to suggest some!*

1. Tina Fey

My original fave! Tina has (and will always be) a huge influence on me. She’s a woman in comedy, something I’ve been drawn to and a successful one at that. I was always obsessed with "SNL," seeing her poke fun at herself yet still remain so confident at that desk during Weekend Update always put a smile on my face. Her list of accomplishments is staggering: eight Emmys, two Golden Globes, five SAG awards, four Writer’s Guild Awards, and a New York Times Bestseller.

2. Kate McKinnon

Kate McKinnon is so important! (Now that I've gotten that out of my system.) Not only is she an openly gay comedian, but she is always playing characters that challenge what it means to be a woman/femininity in general, which I really appreciate. Take the new "Ghostbusters," for instance, she plays this intelligent, pyromaniac, masculine scientist, which in a major motion picture is a pretty big deal, especially since most LGBTQ female representation is through the male gaze and thus focuses on overtly feminine women (not to mention hyper-sexualized). She just doesn’t buy into that, and I’m totally and completely here for it!

3. Beyonce

Does this even need explaining? She’s not just an incredible performer but uses her platform to address issues like feminism and the Black Lives Matter movement in a comprehensive and inclusive manner. She has this incredible ability to keep audiences on their toes, even as a super high profile celebrity, which I think is amazing.

4. Shailene Woodley

Remember when she told us to eat clay, guys? Just kidding but in all seriousness the woman is incredible. She is so politically aware and inspired me to not only become more educated in the realm of politics, but instills hope that change will come and that we can make a difference. I feel in this election season a lot of people feel hopeless (especially me) and Shailene really simplifies things all while remaining hopeful and realistic.

5. Jes Baker

After reading "Things No One will Tell a Fat Girl," I couldn’t exclude her from this list. Everything she writes is genius and really inclusive, her advice is funny and relevant, and she also serves as a reminder to me that all bodies are beautiful. Not to mention her big F U to Abercrombie CEO, Mike Jeffries. Check out that open letter here!

6. Michelle Obama

Let me start by saying I’m not a huge connoisseur of politics, but it seems like Michelle always is doing something whether that be trying to improve school lunches, getting kids more active, singing Carpool Karaoke, the list goes on. She’s also a graduate of Princeton and Harvard so, like, I need to step my game up!

That concludes this very short list of women that are members of my (honorary) girl gang. I’d love to hear about women on your list! If you are reading this on August 1, remember to tell your girlfriends how much you love them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
