It may come as a shock, but two of the most lovely ladies of different centuries actually have much in common: Virginia Woolf, accomplished writer, and Tina Belcher, awkward teen, share many traits, hobbies, and experiences that transcend time.
I delved deep into my research, pouring over episodes of Bob’s Burgers, and letting To the Lighthouse and A Room of One’s Own consume me, trying to unlock the commonalities between the two. What I found is nothing short of fantastic. I feel that I have unearthed connections between two of the best role models a girl could have, and the fact that one is an animated character does not undermine their similarities. So now, gentle reader, I share with you, 6 Things Virginia Woolf and Tina Belcher Have in Common.
1) Neither was a successful driver.
One summer, Virginia Woolf took driving lessons in the luxury car she had bought. Just like Tina Belcher, her lesson did not go well.
Virginia crashed her car into a hedge, similar to the time that Tina Belcher crashed a car into the only other vehicle in the parking lot.
2) Both took longer than average to learn to speak so eloquently.
Though it may be news that Virginia Woolf took a while to master stringing words together to make masterful sentences, any fan knows the classic Tina Belcher “uhhhhh”.
Even grown, Tina still struggles every now and then to find words to say, and when she fails, we hear the old Tina stand by.
3) Tina Belcher and Virginia Woolf both have a naughty side
Tina’s naughty side is obvious. From the erotic friend fiction, to her daydreams about Jimmy Jr., her frisky side is incredibly characteristic.
Author Elizabeth Bowen revealed about Virginia, “She was awfully naughty”, showing another similarity between the two wonderful ladies.
4) Tina Belcher and Virginia Woolf both experienced a great deal of social awkwardness.
Known as the awkward introvert of the time, Virginia often felt uncomfortable around those she did not know all too well. “[Virginia] was shy and awkward, often silent,” said Elizabeth Bowen. Tina, as we have seen, has a reputation for being an endearingly awkward teen, and Virginia could certainly relate.
5) Both ladies enjoyed painting as a hobby.
As seen in Tina Belcher’s attempt to paint something for the Art Crawl, and in Virginia Woolf’s many appreciations of painting, art is another commonality between the two. Tina proved her talents in painting masterpieces of the family dentist, while Virginia loved to paint as a hobby as well as use it as a motif in her novels.
6) Last but not least, Tina and Virginia are both wonderful writers.
Virginia Woolf is known as one of the pioneers of the postmodernist literature movement, peppering feminist themes in her graceful diction, but we can’t forget Tina Belcher’s great literary achievements (namely her erotic friend fiction).
The way she describes Jimmy Jr rivals Virginia’s level of eloquence, and the controversy both young writers received shows just how similar they really are!
