Many people know what makes TCU students happy: free merchandise, cancelled classes, holidays, etc. Unfortunately, these aren't super common. Fortunately, there are many smaller joys that occur much more frequently, some of which you have complete control over. I find these six events and activities to be underrated enjoyment:
1. Getting Out of Classes Early
Sure, cancelled classes are nice breaks, but professors dismissing class before the ending time hits isn't too bad either. If it's your last class, it also signals an early dismissal to the entire day! Even it's first or in the middle of the class lineup, it creates opportunities; opportunities to grab a snack, look over material for the next class, get a head start on homework, etc.
2. Occasional Days Off
Labor Day, MLK, Icepocalypse - they're all mini holidays. Even though one day isn't long enough to leave campus, it still shortens the school week and work load. Whether the school cancellation was expected or not, it is a nice, short breather.
3. Studying in the Commons
I will never understand why so many people flock to Club Lib when we have the Commons. It is not an orthodox place to study, which makes it attractive. It is straight-up beautiful with perfectly manicured grass and flowers. The background noise of water flowing from the fountains and student chatter isn't too distracting. Bonus points for those days when the weather is perfection.
4. Being on the BLUU Third Floor Balcony
You don't have to be right in the middle of the Commons to admire its beauty. You can see the Commons in its entirety from the third floor balcony of the BLUU. You see the rooftops of many campus buildings and even the tip of the chapel in the distance. It also has tables, so this is a good study spot for those who need more quietness.
5. Swinging in Front of Jarvis Hall
We all know about the random swing in front of Jarvis Hall, but we need to take advantage of it. Swinging back and forth, feeling the wind blow all over your body, causes you to temporarily forget about the stress of classes.
6. The Best Bike Path
Unlike the swing, this is my little secret. If you are a cyclist that wants the same feeling of swinging in front of Jarvis, bike over to the ramp that goes down from Scharbauer Hall to the road in between Samuelson-Carter Halls and Colby-Foster Halls. Riding down this downhill slope of a road feels straight-up amazing. HOWEVER: Be careful. Do not run over any person or squirrel and watch for maintenance trucks.
