Congrats! You've completed high school and you're on your way to college. Time to try new things, make new friends, and be independent (somewhat). With move-in day here, and for others quickly approaching, I've gathered a few tips I wish I'd thought of when I was a freshman moving in.
1. Make a list
This may seem obvious and easy and very important! Check your school's list for recommended and must-have items. Of course this way you won't forget anything.
2. Be prepared
This is in correlation with making a list but even more, start packing early on, shop early on, get what you need early on. Be prepared! I personally do not like doing things last minute due to the fact that it stresses me out and nothing goes right from then on.
3. Pack smart
Don't over pack. I am guilty of doing this myself. It's easier said than done, trust me, I know, but it'll make your life and your move-in experience a whole lot easier if you don't pack your whole house with you. I understand you will be away from home and may or may not be able to get home easy, but I promise it'll be okay. I over packed when it came to clothing. And of course I bought even more clothes while away at school. Pack what you need.
4. Know how to pack
This goes hand-in-hand with packing smart. You want to use up as little space as possible, pack light and have room. I personally like the Ziploc vacuum-sealed space bags. They do come in handy and save you space.
5. Load your car the night before
This is a life saver. On move in day, you're either really tired, really nervous or, if you're like me, both. It's best to get everything settled the night before that way when you wake up in the morning all you have to do is get ready and go. No fuss, no stress.
6. Know where your classes are
No one likes being lost and confused. To reduce your chances of being lost or confused on the first day of class, go find your classes beforehand. Roam around campus (take your roommate if you can) and find where things are. Map out your route in your head. That way, you can eliminate a few of the nerves.
