2016. It's known by everyone as one hell of a year. From icons like Carrie Fisher, David Bowie and Harper Lee passing away to the wild American election to everyone making memes of a dead gorilla for eight months (instead of opening up a much needed discussion on the treatment of animals in captivity). Everyone has a reason to hate 2016. But it wasn't all bad. Here are things that happened in 2016 that weren't terrible.
1. The movies.
From fantastic kids movies like "Moana" (which featured Disney's first oceanic princess) and "Finding Dory" to epic action flicks like "Suicide Squad," "Deadpool" and "Star Wars: Rogue One," 2016 had a lot of fantastic movies for us to take our minds off the other stuff.
2. The new pop punk music.
The emo kid inside me was overjoyed when early 2000s bands like Green Day and Blink-182 rose from the ashes like a pop punk phoenix and put out new albums. With other bands like TOP and Panic! at the Disco also putting out new stuff, 2016 was a great year for pop punk.
3. Hillary Clinton was the first woman presidential candidate to win the popular vote.
Whether or not you're with her, it was a big moment for women in history when a woman not only was a major presidential candidate, but won the popular vote.
4. Hamilton. Enough said.
5. Giant Pandas are no longer endangered.
6. New Harry Potter material from J. K. Rowling.
"The Cursed Child" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" both were created this year to take us back to the school we all wanted to go to as children.
Let's start talking about the good things that happened to us this year, and work to make 2017 an even better year!
