6 Things I've Learned From My First Semester Of College

As my first semester of college is complete, I am beginning to reflect the past 5 months of my life. College has certainly been life changing and I wouldn't change anything that's happened, but I've definitely learned a lot.

1. Study and go to class.

Coming into freshman year, there's a lot of temptation. There is always something happening and there is always people around. I've watched friends go out every single night and party until 4 am. As fun as that is, your grades are so important. Freshman year course work is filled with general ed classes and if you put in the work, you can get a good GPA. Classes only get harder as you continue through college so it'll help you to have a good GPA.

2. Watch your mental health.

Pulling an all-nighter to cram for an exam, constantly eating Taco Bell for every meal, and binge-drinking can have major effects on not only your physical health, but your mental health too. As much as I wanted good grades this semester, I realized that I have to have a balance of studying and also taking care of myself. Set aside some time for yourself and do whatever makes you happy, whether that is working out, going on a hike, or watching a couple Netflix shows.

3. Get involved.

I was lucky enough to be involved with my sorority this semester, but I had friends who weren't as involved. School is hard, but getting involved is so important as well. You make so many friends from just joining a club because they'll be interested in the same things as you. College is the time to make new friends and try new things.

4. Stop Judging.

You'll see so many different people when you go to college and I realized this past semester that I would rather have a variety of friends than just the same type of person. Meeting people who are different than you and aren't your usual type of friend is good for you. They'll help expand your horizons and help you to find out more about yourself than you ever thought you would.

5. There is more to life than partying.

This is something I struggled with, because there is always a party. It's important to realize there is more to do than just party. I'll be honest, I went out a lot this past semester, and it made me realize how there are so many other things you can do. You don't have to binge drink every weekend to have a good time. And if you're scared of missing out, like I was, realize most parties are the same and there will always be one the next week end.

6. Enjoy yourself.

Taking care of yourself, getting involved, studying - these are things to remember, but you also have to enjoy yourself in college. You will never be able to go back to your freshman year of college. You have so much freedom and after college you'll have a job and have to support yourself. It's a whole different experience in college especially coming from high school, but it's one I would never trade.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
