6 Things I Miss About My Cat

The struggles of being a cat lady in college

6 Things I Miss About My Cat
Elizabeth Altmann

When I'm away at college I always miss my cat Mitterz. We adopted him when I was 8 years old and he was only a few months old. I grew up with him being by my side almost 24/7, and now that I'm away at school I miss him terribly. I'm almost always thinking about him, so here's 5 things I miss about my Prince Mitterz.

1. His meow

He's always had a unique meow and I love it so much. When he meows it kind of sounds like he's speaking Spanish because instead of it sounding like "meow", it sounds like "mreow". Somehow he fits that Spanish "R" rolling of the tongue in his meows. I love to repeat him when he meows because it's so darn cute.

2. His neediness

When I lived at home Mitterz wasn't very needy, so I always begged for his attention. I'd always pick him up off the floor and cradle him like a baby. He used to tolerate it for a while and eventually get tired of it and want to be let go, but now that I don't live at home he's the exact opposite. My mom doesn't give him quite as much attention as I do, so when I come home for a visit he follows me around 24/7 and will lay next to me any chance he can get. I love the feeling of being needed by my cat.

3. His massaging skills

Any woman can tell you how painful period cramps can be. One thing I've found great for relieving cramps is when my cat massages my stomach. He'll kneed my stomach like he's kneading bread dough. It's the best feeling in the world when all I want to do is rip out my ovaries. When I'm at school and I have period cramps I have to settle for a heating pad, when all I really want is my kitty massage therapist.

4. His love for the water faucet

Whenever my mom or I is in the bathroom he'll run in, hop in the bathtub, and wait for whoever's in there to turn it on. He'll drink water right from the faucet the entire time I'm in the bathroom, so I usually leave it on when I leave, but once I leave he's no longer interested in the trickling water and makes his way to another part of the house.

5. His bedtime routine

When we first got Mitterz we established a routine where we put him and his brother downstairs every night because otherwise they'd both be meowing at our bedroom door all night long. When he was a kitten and his young adult life we had a hard time getting him and his brother down stairs, but as they got older he'd go downstairs voluntarily, while we'd have to physically pick up his brother and bring him to the basement door. Now that he's by himself whenever someone goes into the kitchen (which is where the basement door is) he will canter through the house making his way to the top step by the door waiting for you to give him a treat. Sometimes it's actually time for him to go to bed, while other times I want him to stay up because I want his company, but I can't resist his cute face, so I still give him a treat anyways.

6. Morning cuddles

The thing I probably miss the most about Mitterz is our morning cuddles. Most mornings I'm home alone, so once I wake up I'll go to the basement door and let him up. I could very easily let him upstairs and then start my day, but I just can't resist. I usually let him up and go back in bed, where he'll follow me and we'll have a nice cuddle session. This goes back to the fact that I love feeling needed by my cat. I love our cuddle time because in that moment nothing is more important to him than me and vise versa.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
