The College Student's Guide To Surviving And Thriving

6 Strategies To Tackle Stress
Brain Report

We are all busy people, especially as college students. Life can get hectic balancing class, a job, studying, a social life and of course working in a daily nap. There are some days that I find myself wanting to crawl into a hole and hide from all responsibilities after simply looking at my to-do list. There are some people that work extremely well under stress. They are able to function like a normal human being all while thinking about nine million things at one time, whereas I sometimes struggle with simultaneously walking and talking. When I do find myself in a stressed out state of mind, there are a few things that help me to stay sane and to keep on keepin' on.

1. Journaling

I know that journaling definitely is not for everyone, but I've found it's a great way to vent about the things or people in your life that stress you out. It's also the perfect place to celebrate yourself and your accomplishments without bragging (insert hair-flip emoji here). This is also where most of my to-do lists, grocery lists and solutions to solve all of the world's problems are held.

2. Spend time with a friend

As humans, we are social beings. We were made to be in community, and we rely on the people around us constantly. I have found that studying with my friends is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. I am able to spend some time getting homework or studying done, but then when it comes time for a study break there is already someone present to have a dance party with.

3. Take a power nap

This is my go-to when I am extremely stressed. There is something so beautiful about curling up on the couch and ignoring all of your responsibilities. I've found this is also extremely helpful when stress keeps you from your normal sleep schedule. Extra perk: when you are sleep deprived, these naps can seem like they last multiple hours long when in reality you were only mentally dead for 20 minutes.

4. Find your center

For me, this includes a large iced coffee and a short phone call to my mom. Find what it is that relaxes your shoulders for a hot minute, and enjoy every second of it.

5. Treat yo self

My favorite episode of Parks And Recreation is the episode where Tom and Donna spend the day pampering themselves. When stress gets you down, go buy yourself a bagel, do some online shopping and move on with your life.

6. Be grateful

This is my number one tactic for relieving stress. Before I go to bed, I look back on my day and find something or someone that I am thankful for. Not only does it force me to reflect on the day I just lived, but it reminds me to find the positives even when life seems so negative. I like to write my gratitude down daily on a calendar, but even simply reflecting on it every night helps to put my life into perspective and helps me realize how #blessed I am.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
