Growing up in an Italian household, for anyone that can relate knows it is anything but ordinary. There is always lots of yelling, fighting, singing, dancing, honestly anything that involves making noise. The emphasis we put on Sunday sauce and family is unmatched, even if it is slightly insane.
Here are six things everyone who grew up in an Italian household can relate to:
1. No, sorry, I cant make plans on Sundays.
It's hard to explain to anyone whose family isn't EXTRA Italian, but Sundays are for church, "family time," the fireplace, and Sunday dinner at 3 PM. Sundays in the winter are the best. The fire is going from 11:30, and the sauce is cooking all day. My favorite thing about Sundays growing up was when my Grandma (straight off the boat) would come over and help us cook the sauce, and hang out by the fire. There is nothing like a Sunday dinner!
2. You’ve never had a sip of wine before??
You've had a sip of wine at every Sunday dinner since you were at least 10-years-old. Nobody knows why, but wine is THE culture in Italian families. My grandma even calls it her "Medicine."
3. Your cousins are your BEST FRIENDS.
They're the only ones that have actually experienced all the crazy stories first hand with you. Trying to tell your friends doesn't do the story much justice after the fact. But that is alright because you know you can always come back to your cousins to relive every funny memory again and again.
4. It takes any boy you bring home at least three times to experience the craziness, to wipe that "omg is this actually happening" look off of their face.
I brought my boyfriend to a Family Party for the first time, 3 weeks into dating. I had warned him that my family was nuts, but I don't think I did a very good job of preparing him. No matter what I did though, it wouldn't have helped prepare him for my uncle running around my house with my moms center hall flower arrangement, or my cousins dancing to Starship by Nikki Minaj on my kitchen table.
But this all being said, through his shock and disbelief, he stuck around after all of this. He even participated and couldn't wait for the next party. That's when I knew I had found a keeper.
5. You can not help but talk with your hands.
Whenever I get a little agitated, it is no secret the hands will start flying. I can't help it, I honestly don't know why I do it or how I picked up on it. All I know is that's all I was surrounded by for my whole life. Might as well embrace what you can't change.
6. It is NEVER too late to make pasta.
At every family party, we have all in the following order: appetizers, salad, pasta, the meat dish, and then finally dessert. Seems like a pretty legit and normal family meal. Except for the fact that this has already been dragged out for about 4-hours now and it is around 9 PM. The party is not nearly close to over at this point, and naturally, if you're all together until midnight, chances are you're going to get hungry again. Don't worry 4-pounds of spaghetti with garlic and oil are already being wiped up by grandma.
