Going into sophomore year, I was skeptical about living in the house and was unsure if it something I was actually going to enjoy. Now that I have finished nine months of living there, I can officially say that this year just kicked freshman years' ass.
1. Food, food, food.
Of course, food tops the list because when living in the house the food options are endless. It's not just Wing Wednesday or late night Papa John's ordering that's enjoyable but simply it's the act of never having to eat alone. If you're hungry, chances are at least two other people are right there with you. There's always the late night drunk ordering but there's also the "it's midnight and I just finished my 9th episode of Friends on Netflix and I'm really craving Sonic right now" that means texting your house GroupMe, and finding a group of girls to jump in your car to enjoy some mozzarella sticks with.
2. Tequila Thursdays.
It's Thursday night and you have made some seriously exciting plans to put on a face mask and binge watch the new season of Girls..I mean Lena Dunham is your ab workout for the night. Until your sitting downstairs for dinner and all of a sudden you've been roped into going to Uptown for some tequila. How do you say no to some tequila when you know that these nights are soon to be far and few? The beauty of living in the sorority house means never not having plans on Thursdays, or any weekend for that matter.
3. Sleep is for the weak.
The best bonding times happen at random hours of the night. It's 3 AM and you can't sleep so the thing to do is to watch random documentaries with your friends, right? The countless number of documentaries that were watched as a collective group really helped with my education on prostitution, sex trafficking, and strange addictions. Which in my opinion, is a beneficial use of my tuition money (thanks mom and dad).
4. Running out of clothes is never an issue.
Opening your closet doors and feeling like you have nothing to wear is never an issue in the house because you have 53 other closets to raid. When you move in the house your closet becomes communal, and your favorite shirt becomes 10 other girls favorite shirt too. You never have to wear the same outfit twice and your Instagram thanks you for that.
5. Bathroom parties are a thing, and they rock.
Imagine the "Legally Blonde" scene where they show all the girls getting ready in their towels, except not as glamorous or pretty. Having community bathrooms is not that bad when you have 10 girls sharing four mirrors while blasting Fergie and getting ready for the night. They really come in handy when you need someone to curl your hair or do your eyeshadow and everyone is in the same place. Any given Friday or Saturday night in the sorority house, best believe you will walk in on a bathroom party going down.
6. Being alone is never an option.
You share a house with 50+ girls but thankfully you have a room where you can close your door, right? Wrong, you are NEVER alone when living in the house. You never feel lonely or by yourself because there are constantly things and people happening around you. Think that closing your door can save you? Absolutely not, your door is never closed for more than 10 minutes unless you are sleeping. If you are watching a movie, getting ready, eating, or studying you are constantly doing it in a group setting. You forget what real silence sounds like and very quickly become accustomed to the noise.
Living in the house has been one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. Throughout these past nine months I have made new friendships, strengthened existing ones, and learned to love my sorority and the people in it more than I ever have. Junior year; you have BIG shoes to fill because this past year is one that will be hard to beat.
