Waking up and going to class. It's always the worst on Monday mornings but it's a challenge every morning. Is it really necessary to get out of bed and go to class today? The PowerPoints are posted online and you can teach yourself, right? There was a test last class so there won't be much going on in class today, right? These are all things that go through our heads everyday as we're trying to decide if class is really that important today.
Personally, I don't skip class. I actually enjoy going to my classes. But it's also really fun to hear the reasons why my friends choose to skip their classes. Some of their reasons are legitimate reasons and some of them are pretty funny.
Here're a few of their reasons for skipping class:
1. They're spending that class time studying for another class.
This is crazy! Why do professors assign so much material to study? We shouldn't have to choose between going to class or studying for a test for another class. I know that we should manage our time better, but we're encouraged to be involved and that takes up a lot of time. Some nights by the time I get home from work and eat dinner, it's already 10 p.m. and I'm exhausted. I can totally understand why people skip one class to study for another.
2. They're more productive when they're in the library teaching themselves than sitting in class listening to the professor.
I've taken a class before where I didn't understand a single thing the professor was teaching. I made it a point to go to class every single day with the hopes that maybe one day everything would just make sense (that never happened, in case you were wondering). Some of my friends had taken that class in previous semesters and they kept telling me over and over that I would do better if I skipped that class and used that time to teach myself. That's pretty sad when you can teach yourself better than your professor who's getting paid to teach you.
3. They need to catch up on sleep.
College = not enough sleep. It's inevitable. There's always something going on. Work, night classes, philanthropy events, being social instead of being a hermit in your room and spending a night out with your friends, the list of things that go on at night never ends. There're so many reasons why you get to bed late. It's rough going to bed at 1 o'clock in the morning and waking up for class at 7:30 a.m. I don't blame people for sleeping in, even if that means skipping a class. Part of being a functional student is having enough rest.
4." Literally because class sucks."
That is one of my friend's exact words on why she skips class. I'm assuming she was talking about the general education classes that everyone has to take. Those tend to be pretty boring. They're pretty hard to sit through, especially when what you're learning has absolutely nothing to do with your major.
5. Their class seems like a waste of time.
I took a class last semester that shouldn't even be offered. The class was all about social media and how to use it effectively. If this was 2005, I could understand having a class to teach about how to use Facebook, but it was 2015. The professor was teaching a room full of 20-somethings how to use social media. I'm pretty sure we have it figured out. Classes like that really are a waste of time. It was so hard to not skip that class. I made myself go everyday, and I'm glad I did because our professor randomly gave out bonus points some days just because we showed up.
6. My personal favorite reason for skipping class: They're too hungover and can't sit through class without throwing up.
If this doesn't say 'college, I don't know what does. Think about
They show up to class looking like they were just hit by a bus. Those people probably should've just stayed home. If you can't make it 10 minutes without throwing up, just stay home. Now don't make a habit of getting so drunk that you'll have to skip class the next morning, but it's understandable to happen every now and then. It's college.
So, remember, friends, it's OK to skip class once in a blue moon, but don't skip class every single day. That's how you fail college. Go to class.
