College students seem to see eating as optional. I've heard guys and girls alike say at the end of the day that all they'd consumed that day was coffee and maybe a banana. Obviously, we're all busy, but getting proper nutrition is vital to keep both our bodies and our minds working properly.
Don't have time for lunch or dinner? At the very least, start your day with the most important (and delicious) meal: breakfast.
1. It helps your memory and concentration
You've probably been told lots of times that eating breakfast helps your brain. Still, it's a fact that can't be ignored—a healthy breakfast restores your glucose levels, which are essential to brain function.
2. It actually helps you lose weight
What? You don't usually think that eating will help you lose weight, but in this case, it does! Eating breakfast starts up your metabolism, which helps you burn calories throughout the day. That metabolism boost is the reason some people claim to feel hungrier when they eat breakfast— that's a good thing!
3. It might actually get you better grades
Some studies have actually shown that students who eat breakfast get better test scores (and do better in a whole variety of cognitive tests).
4. It's the tastiest meal (especially in the dining hall)
Leo's isn't always a great source of tasty food, but their breakfast is consistently on point. Even our notorious dining hall can't mess up yummy breakfast classics like scrambled eggs and french toast.
5. It will prevent you from over-eating later
If you skip breakfast, you may be more tempted to reach for snacks later in the day, which are higher in calories and fat, to make up for the meal you missed. If you don't eat all morning or all day, you're more likely to overcompensate later in the day.
6. Bacon
If you miss out on breakfast, you're missing the best opportunity to consume the internet's favorite breakfast food in all it's crispy, meaty glory (sorry, vegetarians).
Just like you wouldn't try to run your car with no gas, don't try to go through your day without giving your body some fuel! At the very least, grab a granola bar or make some oatmeal on your way to class—your body and your brain will thank you.
