People say that living with your best friends in college is not a very good idea, because fights will occur, you will probably not like each others' habits, and you will probably end up not liking them anymore. I understand where people who say these things are coming from, but if a parent says it's not a great idea to live with your best friend from college, who are you supposed to live with? A stranger?
My experience with living with my best college friends is turning out to be an amazing thing. Here are six reasons why living with your best friends is actually a pretty great idea.
Reason 1: You always have someone to talk to.
I know that having my friends as roommates, I can rant to them about professors, work, and homework. They always rant to me or bother me when they are on a homework break, and I welcome it, because I too need a break. Knowing that your friends are there when you need to talk to them about life is pretty awesome.
Reason 2: Someone is there to help you with homework.
Even though I am capable of doing my own homework, I like to know that my roommates are always there to read over my papers before I pass them in. I do the same for them if they need me to edit their papers. Also, I am pretty lucky that I have a writing tutor and a peer math tutor as friends, and I can always call out their names down the hall if I ever need any help.
Reason 3: They happen to be your go-to party buddy.
You can always count on your roommates to be your go-to party buddies. My roommate and I are party buddies; we do not go out unless we are with each other.
Reason 4: You steal each other's food.
In my dorm room, everyone's food is everyone's food, we simply share. Especially if there is food on the coffee table; it's fair game.
Reason 5: You always have someone to come home to.
Living with your best friends can help with homesickness, because they are always there to greet you when you come home from class. They care about you and genuinely want to know know how your day went, and you too want to know how their day has been going as well. I love when my roommates welcome me home if I have been at class or when we come back from winter or summer break.
Reason 6: You always make sure they have fun.
Homework can build up during the course of the week, and we can sometimes get so lost in the sea of words or math problems that we forget about our social life. Having friends who make you take mental breaks from homework are the best type of friends to have around. I know when I have a lot of homework, I always make time to just chill and laugh with my friends and have movie marathons with them.
Having your friends be your roommates can end up being the most wonderful, magical thing that can ever happen to you. It makes your four years of college the best time of your lives.
