A few days ago, a new trailer was released for the next installment of the popular "Battlefield" video game franchise. The video was incredibly well received and fans of the series were already excited for the upcoming release of the game. Little is actually known about the game itself, but many assumptions can be made from past installments and what is seen in the trailer. It may be too early to tell for sure, but here are six reasons why "Battlefield One 'could be amazing.
1. World War I
Try to think of one game in recent memory that explored World War I as its setting. Chances are you won't be able to come up with one. Several years ago, World War II was the setting of many popular game franchises such as "Call of Duty" and "Battlefield," but World War I hasn't been explored as a game setting. Now, in 2016, "Battlefield One" will be set during the first World War, which is a new setting for the franchise. How accurately the war is depicted in game is up to developer DICE, but it seems as though the company is committed to sticking true to the time period. World War I was a horrific period in history to be sure, but video games allow for such eras to be explored in a much lighter tone.
2. Large Scale
As with all other "Battlefield" games, the next entry in the series will feature up to 64 players in one game at a time—a number much greater than most mainstream games. With 64 players, the game plays out drastically different each time which makes no two sessions feel the same. This also prevents the game from becoming stale and creates many fun and interesting moments in-game.
3. Variety
The large scale of each "Battlefield" game allows for much variety in-game. Players can fly planes, drive tanks or play as a foot soldier—to name a few. Players get to pick and choose exactly what they want to do, so they are never forced to play the game in a way they dislike. While this may not be unique to "Battlefield," it is certainly a defining characteristic of the franchise.
4. Release Date
"Battlefield One" will be released on October 21, 2016. This is before the holiday season when video games are released almost daily. The date could not be better to isolate "Battlefield" from the rest of the crowd, but the game is also being released before the next "Call of Duty." This release date is important because many fans of "Call of Duty" are not satisfied with the look of the next entry in that series. The release window for "Battlefield One" effectively allows the title to steal the show before anything else is released.
5. Visuals
DICE as a company has been known to produce some of the best looking games available and "Battlefield One" appears to be no exception. Last year, DICE released "Star Wars Battlefront" and the game almost perfectly represented the sights and sounds of the "Star Wars" movies. Most of what we see about World War I is in gray-scale images, but this year we will have a visually accurate representation of many aspects of the war in full color. Obviously, "Battlefield" is only a game and it will not be a perfect representation, but it should be pretty close to be sure.
6. Learning From Past Mistakes
The last "Battlefield" game developed by DICE, "Battlefield Four," was a good game; but, it was plagued with poor network connection and game-breaking bugs or glitches. DICE realized this and managed to fix almost all of the games problems in due time. But, for most players, it was too late. The game was out for about two years and it was still being fixed. But now, it plays gloriously. Assuming DICE is able to learn from everything that failed in "Battlefield Four," "Battlefield One" will certainly be well polished when it launches.
At the end of the day, "Battlefield One" has only been teased and fans have little hard evidence as how "Battlefield One" will be. But, "Battlefield One" could certainly shape up to be an amazing game.
