6 Positive Songs To Bring Up Your Mood This Winter

Seasonal depression is something that affects many people as the winter hits. Feelings of sadness and hopelessness often come with the colder weather as lots of people experience reduced physical activity, lowered vitamin D exposure, gloomy weather conditions, and many more causes of depression. It's often hard to get through the feelings that come with this time of year, but distracting yourself from the negatives with different things can be beneficial.

Here are six songs to bring up your mood if you are feeling down this winter:

1. Hold My Hand - Jess Glynne

This song has a fun beat and a fun message. It's also pretty fun to sing and dance to! So "darling, hold my hand" if you are feeling down because you definitely are not alone and deserve to feel happy.

2. Flawless Remix - Beyonce (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Who doesn't love some Beyonce? Also, the addition of Nicki is a plus. Listen to this song and remember that no matter how you woke up or how you feel you are flawless. Channel your inner confidence through the lyrics of these powerful ladies.

3. Home - Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

Whistling always brings my mood up! Listen to this song and think who or what your home might be. Home is different to everyone, it can be a place, a person, an idea, or really anything, but thinking about that thing can make you feel better in times of sadness.

4. Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole

This song is just beautiful. It sings about a wonderful future and tells you to remember that it will get better. Our current troubles will soon be in our past just like the clouds. The future is as happy as a colorful rainbow where blue birds fly.

5. You and I - Ingrid Michaelson

Such a cute and positive song about making your own happiness even with very little. As you listen to the fun melodies of the song think about all that you have to be grateful for. The future is bright even if it might not seem like it now. Maybe one day you will be able to "give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance". Doesn't that sound nice?

6. Don't Worry Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin

The tune and beat of this song could make anyone chill out and forget about their current troubles. Even if life seems to not be going your way, it will be better. Sing this song note for note and live your life to these lyrics and just try your best to live by the idea: "Don't worry, be happy".

Find the songs that make you have a positive attitude this winter season to try to help if you are feeling down. These are just a few pieces of music that make me happy. Always remember to stay safe and love yourself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
