Everyone who’s ever stepped foot in sleepy Weston, Connecticut knows firsthand that there really isn’t all that much to do there and no, skateboarding in the town center doesn’t count as something to do. But summer is coming up and as the weather gets warmer, new opportunities to get outside begin to pop up. If Weston has anything else to offer besides Keith Richards and an impeccably high-rated school system, it’s its gorgeous hiking trails that run through the area’s many nature reserves! From Trout Brook Valley to the Stonebridge Waterfowl Preserve, there are spots all across town that you can explore this summer, so let’s see how beautiful Weston can really be!
1. Trout Brooke (Bradley)
The largest preserve in Weston, Trout Brooke Valley offers a multitude of hiking trails, whether you're looking for a rigorous uphill battle (Red Trail) or a long hike to the breathtaking orchard (Blue and Purple Trails), Trout Brooke and its 730 acres is never going to disappoint.
2. Devil’s Den, Weston CT (Godfrey Road West)
Nothing says summer like a day spent in Devil’s Den! You could hike the Katherine Hill trail and have a picnic on the cool mossy plateau of rocks, or head up to the pond to the right of the parking lot, either way, you won’t ever be disappointed in this forest!
3. Devil’s Glen (Valley Forge Road)
I have two words for you: Cliff. Jumping. There I said it. Weston’s best kept secret lives just off of Valley Forge Road and nothing beats a scolding hot day like jumping into Devil’s Glen! Be careful though, it’s a big drop and you definitely don’t want to hit a rock!
4. The Reservoir (Valley Forge)
Now this one is tricky, even though the views are out of this world, many of Weston’s trails along the reservoir are for fishing ONLY, not hiking. Trust me on this one, I’ve gotten scolded by park rangers for hiking where I should be fishing. Interesting fact: Before they filled up the valley that is now the reservoir with water to create a dam, there used to be a whole other village similar to Weston down there!
5. Keane Park, Weston CT (River Road)
If you have a dog that likes to go for a swim, or a child you're babysitting that loves a good swing set, Keane Park in the place for you! It’s not ideal for hiking, since it’s such a small park, but the little river that you must brave a tundra of mud to get to is perfect for a doggy dip and the playground at the entrance is always fun for the little ones.
6. Stone Bridge Waterfowl Preserve (Newtown Turnpike)
Do you love birds as much as I don’t? Great! Then why not given Stone Bridge a go? Like most preserves in Weston, Stone Bridge has a body of water running through it and this time it invites all sorts of wildlife to congregate!
