I just graduated a few months ago and looking back on my college experience, I've got some wisdom/advice I'd like to impart on those of you still in college. These are some of the more important things I think could really enhance anyone's college experience.
1. Do something your freshmen self wouldn't do.
Maybe your first year was a crazy one. Or maybe it was super chill. Either way, challenge yourself. The growth which takes place in a person's freshmen year of college (generally speaking) is quite amazing; the person you are your first year of college compared to the other years can be drastic. I know I definitely wish I could give my freshmen-self some advice.
2. Travel.
Go places. Either with some friends or by yourself, get out and see the world. You can study abroad, spend a summer backpacking or a even a Spring Break getaway. Being multicultural is so so so so important. Not to mention, you'll never be at a better time of your life to drop everything, and just "go". Yes, this will cost some money. Studying abroad often costs something similar to a normal semester at your home university.
3. Make international friends.
Universities are often some of the most diverse places on earth. So many cultures and languages collide for the common purpose of getting an education. Make sure to put yourself out there, and meet those students from around the world. Not only will you learn first hand about other cultures, you could quite possibly be someone's first friend in a new country.
4. Take classes/do internships that will make you stand out on the job market.
There's a LOT of new job seekers out there. You have to stand out. That summer abroad in Barcelona pops on a resume (speaking from experience here) and you never know who the person hiring you might be. That "one" skill you learned from that "one" internship might be just the thing a company is looking for. Don't underestimate the power of experience.
5. Make a post-grad plan but BE FLEXIBLE.
Statistically, most recent graduates' first jobs have nothing to do with their degree(s). It's okay to not have things pan out before graduating, the summer following, or even the following year. Adulting is hard, and those loan bills are coming. Financial stability can often be more of a priority right after school than following your dreams (and that's okay); just DON'T give up on them. Rather, use that time to set yourself up to be able to follow them the in the best way(s) possible.
6. Don't say "later".
If there's something you want to do, a club/organization you want to join, a place you want to go to or a special someone you want to introduce yourself to, DON'T WAIT. Don't put it off. Join that club NOW. Make plans to go to that place. Ask out that guy/girl. One of the worst things to leave college with is regret. Live actively, not vicariously.
I could go on and on, but I won't. College was an AMAZING time but it came with it's learning moments. I challenge y'all to implement some of these nuggets o' advice and make your college experience the absolute best!
Best wishes and Cheers,
ZER
