I have lived in the Poconos, Pennsylvania, for over 10 years now. Telling people where I live was never a problem since I've been here a majority of my life. It did not matter to me until freshman year of college. One of the first questions people asked was, "Where are you from?" I gladly replied, "I live in the Poconos!" The questions and statements that followed were either laughable, somewhat true, or just plain crazy.
1. "People actually live there?"
Yes, people do live here. We have jobs and cars. We have supermarkets, fast food, and malls too. We even have public schools and highways, can you believe it?
2. "You must be rich."
This is my favorite question just because people assume I have a money tree in my backyard. In reality, there may be a couple people here and there that are high middle class, but other than that, everyone else is part of working class America.
3. "Does it snow a lot?"
OK this question is one of the few that is actually a "yes." The Poconos is situated right on a mountain so the snow is a bit much. If you enjoy skiing and snow days, it's perfect. If you're anything like Bambi and I, you can't wait for winter to be over.
4. "Do you live in a resort?"
As much as I'd love to live in Skytop Lodge (pictured above), I live in a normal house. However, I do live within an hour of Dorney Park and a number of waterparks. Camelbeach Waterpark, Kalahari Resorts, and Great Wolf Lodge are all about 40 minutes away from my house.
5. "Aren't there bears out there?"
I have seen a total of four bears the whole time I have lived here, but many people swear it's a regular occurrence for me. If anything, deer are the animals to worry about. They have this strange habit of jumping in front of headlights and getting hit every day.
6. "Do you like NASCAR?"
Here's the deal: I live somewhat close to Pocono Raceway, but I am NOT a fan of NASCAR. I don't have anything against it, I just don't get any fulfillment from watching cars drive around a track hundreds of times. However, I am an avid fan of Ricky Bobby and Wonder bread.
