There are two kinds of nights in the world of college – the going out, dressing up, high-energy, let’s-not-remember-anything night, and then the kind of night where no one’s going to get between you, a blanket, and a pizza (also, occasionally, studying happens on these nights).
Seeing as there are only so many times you can sob your way through The Notebook or convince yourself that maybe the Titanic will actually stay afloat, here is a list of the top six movies every college girl should watch on those staying in kind of nights
6. Midnight in Paris–There are few things more marvelous than Owen Wilson as a hopeless romantic in Paris. This movie is a little different and offbeat. Watching it is a little like dreaming. It’s bittersweet, but what I love is it shows you that it’s possible to be idealistic and realistic at the same time. Also, it’s full of references to 1920's geniuses like Dali and Fitzgerald, so you can feel smart while watching it too.
5. Pride and Prejudice –No one pulls off the nineteenth century fashion like Keira Knightley. While it isn’t exactly a modern drama, it’s easy to follow because the problems are still relatable. Boy meets girl, boy is rude and annoying, girl hates boy, we know the drill. The scenery is gorgeous and will make you wish you lived in the English countryside. Plus, if anyone ever told me that they loved me “most ardently,” I would probably marry them on the spot.
4. 500 Days of Summer –A favorite of my best friend, this movie is the perfect mix of funny, sad, and truth. It is hilarious at some parts without being irreverent, however it is not happy enough for you to mistake it for a fairytale. Overall, it tells a story about a relationship that is so real in its imperfections, what's not to love? It features Zooey Deschanel before she became Jessica Day and Joseph Gordon Levitt before people realized he looks like Heath Ledger, and they are both utterly amazing to watch. Show this movie to anyone who says they don’t like chick flicks and watch them reevaluate their whole lives.
3. Perks of Being a Wallflower –I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it. Charlie (Logan Lerman at his absolute cutest) starts high school with no friends and a rocky past. It’s a wonderful story about misfits and friendship, plus it has like twenty quotes that make the best philosophical Instagram captions. In all seriousness, this movie will make you cry, hurt, and feel an enormous amount of love as it teaches you to really look at what’s important in life. Bonus points if you read the book, too.
2. Mean Girls –If you can’t quote it, you can’t hang (that’s just like, the rules of feminism!). No matter how many times you’ve seen it, this movie doesn’t get old. Even when you and your friends can manage to basically act out the whole thing verbatim. It’s definitely okay for Regina and the Plastics to follow you through college; the further away from high school you are, the funnier this movie becomes.
1. Pitch Perfect –I didn’t have the highest expectations when seeing this movie because, aca-awkward, I was not an acapella fan. However, it completely blew me away and I still laugh like a crazy person every time I watch it. Beca starting college reminds me so much of the first few days of my freshman year, and the music is so on point. Also, the sequel is coming out next year, so now is the best time to brush up on your Pitch Perfect knowledge.
