The only thing hotter then this mid-summer weather is 1980s nostalgia. From movies like Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Robocop, to retro gaming consoles like the Nintendo NES (which I talk about here: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/pokemon-nintendo-...) millennials and their parents can’t get enough of that magical decade. Music artists in particular are obsessed with classic 80s sounds. Here are )X( modern hits that take musical or lyrical inspirations from 80s chart toppers.
Shut Up And Dance (Walk The Moon) = I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Whitney Houston)
So you wanna have a dance party. Well, kicking things off with either of these anthems would be a safe bet. This smash hit by Walk The Moon is practically a sequel to the Whitney Houston classic. Both have a riff that is easily recognizable from the first measure, and will have whole squad is on the dance floor by the second measure.
I Gotta Feeling (The Black Eyed Peas) = Celebration (Kool Gang)
The styles are different, but the message is the same. You’ve got a reason to party, and you’re not going to stop until the sun goes down.
Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepson) = Girls Just Want To Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper)
Nothing says teenage girl slumber party like these jams. Cyndi Lauper had this event on lock longbefore Carly Rae Jepson. Jepson probably grew up with this song rocking on her iPod. These two songs are bane of male siblings everywhere.
I Can’t Feel My Face (The Weeknd) = Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough (Michael Jackson)
No, he’s not the King Of Pop reincarnate, but The Weeknd is the next best thing. The vocals of these two singers are astonishingly similar. The Weeknd has directly stated Michael as one of his influences, and ‘I Can’t Feel My Face’ is worthy salute MJ.
Style (Taylor Swift) = Like A Prayer (Madonna)
Blonde superstars never go out of style.
Some Nights (Fun.) = Don’t Stop Believin' (Journey)
There is much debate was to what songs will last through the decades. Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ has never dipped in popularity, and I think Fun.’s ‘Some Nights” may bridge the decades as well. Both songs best served with rolled down windows and good friends.
