6 Great Movie Video Games That Need To Be Made

For some reason whenever there is a video game based on a movie, you can almost instantly guarantee that it sucks. It's kind of sad because most of them come off as lazy and rushed and ruin great opportunities for creating a unique gaming experience. This isn't always the case, some video games based on movies are actually quite good. Take "Spider-Man 2," that game is one of the best superhero games ever and still holds up over a decade later (except for the PC edition of the game which is unspeakably terrible by any standard). It did more than cash in on the movie it provided wish fulfillment where you actually felt like you were Spider-Man because it innovated and created a web swinging mechanic, something every subsequent Spider-Man game takes for granted. Or there's "Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie" with one of the most self-explanatory names ever. This game is still to this day one of my favorite video games ever. For one, you only play as Kong for a fraction of the game. The game instead has you play as Jack Driscoll and his search for Ann on Skull Island. It is a really intense first-person experience where there is very little ammo and what you do get, you use sparingly. There is also no heads-up display so you never know when your gun is running dry. The monsters are terrifying and if any of your party dies you fail so you feel responsible for the group rather than just yourself. The game also had an adaptive difficulty feature, one of the first if not the first to ever have that option.

Sometimes there are also games like "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" or "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay," where the games are better than the movie or games like "Ghostbusters: The Video Game" where they are released years later and are a wonderful surprise. However most of the time there are games like "Thor: God of Thunder" or even "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" that are just absolutely terrible and total waste of money for the consumer and developer. However there have been enough good games based on movies or even good games in general to give us hope, so here are six potential games based on movies that could be downright awesome if done right.

1. "Zombieland"

There will never be a better zombie movie than this, no argument. I could write a whole article on that but the point is this movie is just fantastic, it is hilarious and heartfelt with great characters and visuals. One of the highlight moments of the film is the "zombie kill of the week" scene and I think that could be a fun incentive to get creative with your zombie kills and sharing it online and have a weekly challenge. Zombie games have been quite serious and depressing lately with "The Walking Dead: and "The Last of Us" which are definitely amazing games, but an approach this way could be a fun and refreshing change of pace. It could even be set up like a cross of the co-op of "Left 4 Dead" with the creative options of "Dead Rising." The possibilities are really endless.

2. "Van Helsing"

Technically there was a video game based on this when the film came out but it was pretty by the book and unmemorable. However the core concept is just awesome, think "Castlevania" with more recognized monsters and more gadgets. The options for gadgets and weapons are endless and the developers could go to town with creating the steampunk design and including even more monsters from the Universal films. It could even be open world where you are hunting down monsters in Transylvania, similar to "The Witcher" series. I just really don't want this concept to go to waste and any revival of it would make me happy.

3. "Inglourious Basterds"

A few years ago there was a game that was basically this same concept of over-the-top hilarious World War II violence called "Brothers in Arms: Furious 4" that was quietly cancelled after negative feedback—which was understandable because the series was based on gritty and realistic WWII combat and the sequel would have been like making a sequel to "The Last of Us" like my proposed "Zombieland" game. The question isn't whether the concept or game was good, it's whether it was what fans of the series wanted. That being said, I think the concept is great and could be an open world game like the "Saints Row" series but in World War II and, just like my proposed "Zombieland" game, give you a variety of options to collect your 100 Nazi scalps for Aldo Raine and reward you for your creativity. The World War II genre of games are notoriously serious so again this could be a breath of fresh air and just be a blast of fun.

4. "Inception"

One of the most interesting parts of this film is when they talk about how the technology was developed to train combat troops by providing realistic simulation of what is like to be shot or stabbed or things of that nature but the concept was expanded until you get people like Cobb that are hired to steal secrets from the dreams of others. Exploring that development could be an interesting narrative, maybe about a soldier that steals the technology to make some money. The gameplay possibilities are endless, whether it is as designing your own dreams like "Minecraft" or finding a way to manipulate the environment around you or any other myriad of possibilities. Christopher Nolan has even said he is interested to see this concept explored in video games so fingers crossed we'll see this happen one day.

5. "Sin City"

This movie is visually stunning and the subject matter of it and the comics are exceptionally dark and brutal. I think this art style would translate easily into a video game and I'd love to see Telltale get a crack at turning this into an episodic series like "The Walking Dead." Or Rockstar can get their hands on it and make the game similar to the "Max Payne" series. Either way, the visuals, mysteries to solve and mature themes could make a masterpiece of gaming with the right hands behind it and I'm all for it.

6. "Mission: Impossible"

I've been dying for there to be a good spy game but there really hasn't been any for quite some time. My hopes were highest for "Alpha Protocol" which wanted to be the first Espionage RPG but that game just did not feel finished. Which is a shame since the concept was so cool. Still, the "Mission: Impossible" series is ripe for a game adaptation. You could create your own agent to make your own team, have a variety of missions that you can choose to accept and then plan out the action. Like "Splinter Cell" with more teamwork. I'd be up for any spy game honestly but the idea of choice inherent in this series could be really engaging for players and saving the world never gets old.

These are all my opinion though and are by no means a comprehensive list. What are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Did I miss any you'd like to see? Let me know in the comments below!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
