What’s a better excuse to watch movies all day than being snowed in? And what better way to enjoy the winter magic than from the comfort of your own home? Here’s a list of seven movies filled with snow, ice, and all things winter you can enjoy without ever having to put pants on or worrying about your hair freezing.
1. "Bridget Jones's Diary"
Bridget Jones embodies the terror that is being single in your 20s and constant failed attempts at self-improvement, but better because she’s Renee Zellweger and lives in London. The flurries in this movie make their appearance at the annual Christmas party Bridget attends where year after year her family sets her up with a less than eligible bachelor. You can appreciate snow and the travesties of dating while warming yourself up with the delightful British-ness of leading men Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.
2. "The Shining"
A classic work of cinema to watch when the snow has driven you to the brink of madness, or even murder. Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, brings his family to Colorado to be the caretaker of hotel during the winter off season in hopes of a little solitude and to cure his writer’s block. After watching this movie you will realize maybe it is bad to lock yourself in your room to avoid your problems or frigid temperatures.
3. "Best Man Down"
When best man Lumpy overindulges at their wedding, newlywed Minnesotans, played by Justin Long and Jess Weixler, embark on a journey to find the one person in Lumpy’s contacts that isn’t a pizza delivery place (goals). This movie takes place during winter in Minnesota, so you can’t get much snowier than that. Pair that with its adorably unexpected plot line and you’ve got a great way to hide from the reality of winter.
4. "While You Were Sleeping"
How many times have you wished you could just force someone to be your boyfriend? Well Sandra Bullock does exactly that in this movie when she saves a man life while at work and he slips into a coma. This classic rom-com starring '90s Bullock is a must see, and seeing Chicago in the winter season will make you thankful to live anywhere else.
5. "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"
Michael Cera steps out of his normal awkwardness in this movie and plays Scott Pilgrim, a rocker who has more trouble getting rid of girlfriends than getting them. Scott runs into problems when he can’t get rid of his girlfriend and falls in love with colorfly haired Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winestead. He is then forced to battle her army of ex boyfriends while fighting the frigid Canadian winter. There’s nothing more chilling than being booted from a love triangle in Canada.
6. "Titanic"
You may be cold in the winter, but you will never be Jack Dawson freezing to death in the Atlantic cold. If Rose, played by Kate Winslet, can float on a door in icy waters you can walk to class in below freezing weather. This beautiful love story will warm your heart no matter how cold it is outside, and if that doesn’t do it for you there’s always beautiful Leonardo DiCaprio circa 1992.
