It seems that the Broadway smash "Hamilton" is the only show on people’s minds these days. But this New Year, Broadway will spring up with new shows! Here are the ones that should definitely be on your list.
1. "Eclipsed"
The gut-wrenching drama features Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o in her Broadway debut. The show, which extended twice and sold out at the Public Theatre, is transferring from Off-Broadway to the Great White Way in February. The play is about the relationships among a group of women who are detained and raped by a Liberian rebel officer. This show is sure to be a must-see this year.
2. "Disaster"
This amazing production is co-written and staring Broadway radio personality and pianist, Seth Rudetsky. An equally amazing cast featuring Adam Pascal of "Rent," Roger Bart of "Young Frankenstein," Kerry Butler from "Hairspray," and Max Crum from "Grease" joins him. The musical is a hysterical look at old 1970’s disaster movies. Check out this wonderful cast this March!
3. "The Crucible"
After his brilliant staging of "A View From A Bridge," Director Ivo van Hove takes on another Arthur Miller classic. This political drama is framed around a man falsely accused of witchcraft in colonial Salem, MA. The production will also feature original music by Philip Glass.
4. "American Psycho"
After a sold-out run in London, this musical based off of the movie by the same name will take the Broadway stage in April. Set in 1987, a handsome, young urban professional lives a second life as a gruesome serial killer by night. The show will reunite Next to Normal cast mates Alice Ripley and Jennifer Damiano and feature music and lyrics by "Spring Awakening" writer Duncan Sheik. It’s going to be killer!
5. "Waitress"
Singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles takes a spin at writing a musical with this heartwarming tale of a pregnant waitress named Jenna, an unhappily married woman in the Deep South. She meets a newcomer to her town and falls into an unlikely relationship as a last attempt at happiness. Featuring Tony winner Jessie Muller as Jenna, this show is too sweet to miss!
6. "Shuffle Along"
Five time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Brandon Victor Dixon, and Joshua Henry star in this classic American musical. Take a backstage look at the events that led to the creation of the groundbreaking Eubie Blake-Noble Sissle musical "Shuffle Along." Get tickets to this one fast! It is sure to sell-out!
