6 Basic Things Every Northerner Coming To Alabama Must Know

Here are some things I had to learn the hard way.

Moving from the arctic tundra that can be Michigan to the frying pan of a state that is Alabama for college was one of the biggest changes of my life, so for those of you who are not sure what to expect when stepping on UA's campus as a full-time member of the Crimson Tide, let me show you a few things.

1. Game Day = Fashion Show

Not a drill, us northerners are used to jeans and a tee to rep our favorite team but not down south. There second you cross the Alabama state line and pull into Tuscaloosa, you will find that wedges, sundresses and crimson and white button downs are the only get ups you'll see in the student section in good old BDS.

2. If You Can See Your Shorts Under Your Tee...You're Doing it Wrong

Big Tee's and frockets were something unheard of in Michigan. So you can imagine mine and my mothers collective confusion on move in day when none of the girls we saw were wearing any shorts underneath their oversized tee's.

3. Its going to be hot. Like get-a-heat-stroke while-frying-an-egg-on-the-street-while-the-sun-fries-you kind of hot

Below is an actual picture of me 85 percent of the time in Alabama

4. Southern hospitality exists.

Prepping you for the initial shock you will experience the first time you hear a Chik-Fil-A employee say "my pleasure" when handing you your nuggets.

5."Y'all"

Like it or not one day you will catch yourself referring to a group as "y'all" and realize you have been saying it for who knows how long.

6. Full towns close down over one inch of snow.

*thinks about every time I've had to shovel a path through the snow just to leave the house to get to school*

Either way, just be prepared for some major culture shock my fellow northerners, but trust me, it will be worth it! And good luck!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
