For those of you who call Long Island, or should I say, "Lawn Guyland," your home, whether you're from Suffolk or Nassau, you know what I am talking about here. Going away to college and meeting new people from all over the map, you have argued these six points at least once:
1. We live on Long Island, not in Long Island.
Don't try and fight it because you will be shot down. You live in Brooklyn or in Queens, but you live on Long Island. The same goes for when you are on Fire Island. I will correct you every time until you get it right, sister.
2. The upstate debateSo I've been told anything above Albany is what should really be considered Upstate New York. Let's take a good look at the map. See that landmass all the way down at the bottom of New York? What's that? Long Island, you say? Correct. I've referred to anything north of Long Island as "upstate" since the day I learned how to use a compass rose and I'm not about to change my ways now, honey.
3. The bagel battle
If you aren't from Long Island, you simply have not eaten the best bagel out there. Have you ever had a rainbow bagel with birthday cake cream cheese? Mmmm. I feel bad for your taste buds; they don't know what they're missing.
4. The pizza problem
The same goes for the pizza and don't even get me started on pizza bagels. Delicious. There must be something in our water... just sayin'.
5. The sanctity of the beach
No matter where you are on Long Island, you are no more than 15 minutes from the beach. It's the perfect kind of therapy for any stressful situation; your favorite meeting spot for you and all of your friends, and obviously the best place to get your tan on. It makes no sense to me how other people can survive when they tell me they live an hour or more from the closest beach. How do you do it!?
6. "Every Long Islander thinks they have the best of everything..."
Duh. There's no place like home, and there's no better home than Long Island. With New York City in our backyard to Montauk out east, we have a little bit of everything to make us all happy.
