Chance The Rapper just released his new project "Coloring Book," and it is an absolute triumph. Chance has become one of the most popular rappers in the world, and continues to soar with his newest release. Part of what makes Chance so successful is his ability to mesh a varied amount of song stylings into one project. To celebrate this; here are the six albums that "Coloring Book" is.
1. A Summer Album
"Coloring Book" is bright, passionate and joyful, basically everything a great summer should be. The upbeat and loud production and vivid lyricism Chance delivers is exactly what a summer rap album should sound like. Chance knows his young audience is ready to hang out and relax this summer, and has given us the perfect project to make it possible. Just imagine sticking your toes in the water while "Summer Friends" plays in the background. Perfection.
2. A Kanye Tribute Album
Chance and Kanye
"Kanye's best prodigy
He ain't sign me but he proud of me"
On Chance's "Blessings" outro, Chano makes sure to let the world know his hero Kanye West has his back. Chance is the most important Chicago rapper since Kanye (only challenged by "Don't Like" era Chief Keef) and often incorporates the old Kanye style in his raps. Chance has also learned Ye's most underappreciated skill: collaboration. Chance has a wide range of collaborators on "Coloring Book, and each mixes their unique style with Chance's." Everyone from Lil Yachty to Justin Bieber to Kanye himself makes an appearance, and they all bring their absolute best.
The production credits haven't been released yet, but it very likely that Kanye has production on "All We Got," which he also features on, and possibly other tracks. Even if he doesn't have more production, it is undoubtable that "Coloring Book" is heavily influenced by Mr. West, and Chance's tribute to his O.G.
3. A Gospel Album
With two songs called "Blessings," on it, "Coloring Book" can definitively be pronounced a religious album. Further than that, the choir backed tracks give it the classification of a true to form gospel album.
Chance praises God and the gifts he has received in his life. His daughter and her mother, his ability to make a living as an independent rapper, and all the great things in his life, Chance gives credit to the big man upstairs. Chance is able to represent a very modern and realistic Christian man. He expresses his love for God, but also admits his faults and embraces his human imperfection. He has the ability to candidly speak on his faith without sounding preachy, a skill that is highly intricate and rare.
4. A Very Fun Album
Chance has made some of the most enjoyable and energetic music in modern hip-hop, and "Coloring Book" continues this joyful streak. Songs like "No Problems" and "All Night" are classic high-energy Chance, and highly danceable. It is nearly impossible to listen to "Coloring Book" without an honest smile creeping across your face, which is the true mark of a truly fun album.
5. A Very Personal Album
Chance has always been willing to open his life to his listeners. On "Coloring Book," Chance continues telling his story, perhaps even more than usual. One of the major themes of the album is Chance's relationship with the mother of his child whom he refers to as "his everything." Chance, like all of the greats of hip-hop, is able to take his experiences and turn them into great music.
6. A Classic Album
In a time where rap music is quickly judged as classic or trash, "Coloring Book" achieves classic status. Chance has risen to a level rare for an independent artist, and "Coloring Book" is a celebration of this achievement while reminding the world that Chance is an undeniable force in hip-hop.
