5 Natural Mood Stabilizers

Manmade drugs are great... except for when they’re not, and you realize that you don’t necessarily need some synthesized, processed chemicals designed largely for profit rather than benefit going into your body. The fact of the matter is everything we need to heal and/or treat our bodies can be found in the natural world.

Months ago, when I was was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder [MDD], my therapist told me that though she was willing to prescribe me medical grade anti-depressants, that she’s seen evidence that they can can halt or even prevent mental, emotional and spiritual growth of her clients. Alternatively there are many natural mood stabilizers that work just as well if not better. Since that day I have researched natural, over-the counter mood stabilizing supplements. Though there are dozens, here are at least five that are definitely worth trying:

  1. Tryptophan

This was recommended specifically by my therapist, who takes this supplement herself. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which, after being processed by the body, becomes serotonin which promotes relaxation and calmness. As someone who uses this regularly, I can say that tryptophan has immensely helped in clearing the busy and distressing thoughts that depression and anxiety can bring, making it much easier to perform tasks and, really, to exist.

2. Maca Root

Maca is a plant that hails from Peru and its root is used for increasing energy and stamina, and is therefore combative to depression. Additionally, Maca increases fertility, libido and regulates the hell out a person’s menstrual cycle (personal testimony). A Tryptophan + Maca Root cocktail can work wonders.

(Bonus: Maca helps many women to gain weight in their hips/thighs/butt and chest or wherever they carry naturally).

3. B Vitamins

B vitamins are known to help neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin and dopamine which regulate mood. B vitamins can work similarly to vitamin C in increasing health of the immune system.

4. Tyrosine

Tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid that also promotes neurological health, especially the production of dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine and improves one’s ability to stay alert and to complete tasks.

5. L-theanine/Green Tea

L-theanine is an amino acid that produces dopamine, serotonin and GABA in the body and is found almost exclusively in green tea. Can we take a moment to just reflect on the fact that you can by 100 bags of green tea for 1.00 at the dollar store? L-theanine is linked to the reduction of physical and mental stress as well as improvements in learning, memory, and attentiveness.

Whether you're anti-chemicals, don’t have insurance, or just don’t want to pay a steep bill for scripts, there are many solutions for those of us who need help with our mental, chemical health. These are just a handful -- try some out and find a recipe that makes for the healthiest you.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
