52 is a big number - that's a lot of Christmas songs. But don't mistake that for not being selective because there are so many Christmas songs and they've all been recorded and then rerecorded by an even larger number of artists. Here are the ones that have made the cut; is your favorite one of them?
1. The Christmas Song
Most people will recognize this song as "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire" rather than its given name, but it's a holiday favorite nonetheless (it just feels like Christmas, doesn't it?). And Nat King Cole's version (the original) is obviously the best.
2. O Holy Night
There's no denying it: this one's a Christmas classic. Celine Deon's is easily the most beautiful version ever recorded (the way she belts "noel" at the end? *dies*) but Josh Groban certainly gives her a run for her money.
3. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
Simply iconic. Brenda Lee (or "Little Miss Dynamite" as they used to call her) has the coolest vocals and absolutely kills it.
4. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
Perfect for the beginning of the Christmas season (for obvious reasons) because it really gets you into the holiday spirit. Bing Crosby's version in particular.
5. It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
Is it really Christmas without listening to Andy Williams sing about everything that makes the season so, well, wonderful?
6. The Little Drummer Boy
One of the more religious songs from the season and one of my favorites; there's honestly nothing better than The Harry Simeone Chorale version.
7. All I Want For Christmas Is You
You probably think I'm talking about the Mariah Carey song (which is great, don't get me wrong), but have you heard the one by Vince Vance & the Valiants? Because it's completely different and you've been missing out if you haven't been jamming out to it over the years.
8. Blue Christmas
Nothing can beat the Elvis version but the one from Year Without A Santa Claus is particularly heartbreaking.
9. Hey Santa
Carnie and Wendy Wilson have the best harmonies and this is just an awesome, awesome Christmas song.
10. Jingle Bell Rock
One of the coolest Christmas songs (I mean there's a reason that The Plastics, quite memorably, danced to it in Mean Girls) - thanks, Billy Helms.
11. Holly Jolly Christmas
Another song to get you into that Christmas spirit - Burl Ives performed a wonderful version in the 1964 Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie.
12. Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
After taking the rock 'n' roll scene by storm, it only made sense that John Lennon did the same for Christmas music in his post-Beatles career. His wife, Yoko Ono, was featured on the track along with a children's choir.
13. Santa Baby
Creepy when you think about it too much, but also a holiday staple. And how can you not love Eartha Kitt's version?
14. I'll Be Home For Christmas
This one always makes me sad (especially when the radio station plays holiday messages to and from the troops beforehand), but it's a beautiful song. Bing Crosby and Michael Bublé both do fantastic renditions of it.
15. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Best way to hype everyone up for Christmas and keep them all in line. And nothing beats the Fred Astaire version but Bruce Springsteen comes pretty damn close ("EVERYBODY OUT THERE BEEN GOOD?").
16. Christmas Time Is Here
It doesn't really feel like Christmas without Charlie Brown.
17. You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch
Or without the Grinch.
18. The Gift
Grossly underrated. Listen to Aselin Debison's gorgeous vocals.
19. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Judy Garland left us with several classic songs over her career; this one is unbelievably beautiful (and sad). And then The Carpenters did the song justice in their wonderful cover.
20. Believe
A newer Christmas tune, Josh Groban recorded this for The Polar Express film and it's become an absolute favorite of mine.
21. Baby It's Cold Outside
Very creepy, but also very good. Which is probably the reason why it's been recorded by so many musical duos over the years - Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton's easily the best (don't trust that drink he gave you, Dolly!)
22. Frosty The Snowman
A classic sung, famously, by Jimmy Durante.
23. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
Another classic song about another classic character from this time of year. Brought to us by Gene Autry.
24. Feliz Navidad
I've heard many blasphemous statements over the years about this song being annoying and I hope all of you non-believers know that you're wrong. Thank you, Jose Feliciano for this one.
25. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Either your father has been impersonating Santa this entire time or your mother is having an affair and your family is in shambles. Devastating either way. The Ronettes depict this unfortunate tale the best out of anyone.
26. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
Another holiday tragedy. Elmo and Patsy will be seeing you in court, Mr. Claus.
27. Last Christmas
I have a love/hate relationship with this song. Thanks for that Wham...I guess.
28. Grown Up Christmas List
Amy Grant reminds us of why it gets more and more difficult to make a wish list as we get older: there are just some things we want that can't be wrapped in a pretty package.
29. Do They Know It's Christmas?
Band Aid, the group made up of some of the 80s' biggest performers, delivered a well-intentioned message through this awesome tune. I say "well-intentioned" because it's true that we shouldn't forget the less fortunate during this exciting time of year, but some of the lyrics make me scratch my head (to say that Africans don't know it's Christmastime because they don't have snow is well...yeah. Because why aren't they then making the same claim of Australians or, say, Floridians for that matter?) Great song, nonetheless.
30. Silent Night
Most of you won't agree with me, but I'll come right out and say it: Stevie Nick's version is the best. It just is. (Of course the Bing Crosby one is gorgeous as well but that should go without saying.)
31. We Three Kings
A very old Christmas carol about the night of Jesus' birth. I'm particularly partial to the version by The Irish Tenors.
32. Do You Hear What I Hear?
The Bing Crosby version is a classic as well as a personal favorite, but Carrie Underwood actually does a really great job with it.
33. Silver Bells
Bing Crosby is quite honestly the King of Christmas songs; just the sound of his voice really defines the season, you know? This one in particular wouldn't be what it is without the help of Carol Richards, however.
34. White Christmas
Bing Crosby strikes again; it's almost like he did an entire album of perfect Christmas songs (oh, right, he did). But The Drifters also have a wonderful version of this song that is unlike anything else you'll listen to during the season and that's why I love it. So let's all listen to Bing Crosby and The Drifters while we pray for snow this Christmas.
35. Up On The House Top
If someone doesn't know or understand what it's like for children to anxiously and excitedly await the arrival of Santa Claus, show them the Gene Autry version of this one.
36. Sleigh Ride
Let's take a moment to pause and thank The Ronettes for their version of this awesome song. The instrumental by Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops Orchestra is also extremely excellent as is the one by Leroy Anderson.
37. Christmas Canon
I'm not sure what can be said about this one other than that everything about it is gorgeous. Well done, Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
38. Carol of the Bells
This is one of the most epic Christmas songs. Trans-Siberian Orchestra has a really cool rock version and then there is of course the choral one that I think most of us are familiar with.
39. Merry Christmas Darling
Easygoing and romantic, The Carpenters hit the jackpot with this one.
40. Old Toy Trains
This song always makes me think very fondly of my childhood. Roger Miller just has the most soothing voice.
41. Here Comes Santa Claus
Gene Autry really knows how to get us all pumped for Santa's arrival.
42. Santa's Beard
If you need help sorting out the real Santa from his numerous imposters, The Beach Boys can help you out with that. Combine their happy-go-lucky summer harmonies with Christmas and it somehow works.
43. We Need a Little Christmas
Tell 'em, Angela Lansbury.
44. Christmas Waltz
I hope you didn't think we'd get through this list without a little Frank Sinatra. Because that would just be downright criminal.
45. We Wish You A Merry Christmas
Is it repetitive? Absolutely. Do I care? Not at all. Now, somebody bring those carolers some figgy pudding, damn it; they won't go until they get some so...your move.
46. Winter Wonderland
There are a lot of really excellent versions of this classic song, but I think The Andrew Sisters just might take the cake. Just listen to those harmonies!
47. Let It Snow
Dean Martin calls upon the elements and you'll find yourself doing the same whether or not you actually like the snow. Because Christmas does that sort of thing to you.
48. Deck the Halls
So we meet again, Bing Crosby.
49. The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)
Okay, Alvin? ...Alvin? ...ALVIN!!!!
50. Where Are You Christmas?
Every year I feel a little personally attacked by Faith Hill for making me cry every time I listen to this song.
51. Ave Maria
Beautiful, beautiful song. Listen to Barbra Streisand's rendition; it's everything you could hope and dream that it'd be.
52. 12 Days of Christmas
And so we conclude our program with a classic carol. It's always exciting to be able to sing along to this song without missing a word (remember when we didn't know what a partridge was, but accepted it as a romantic offering regardless?). There're honestly so many amazing versions of this one, but I think Perry Como's is the biggest standout for me.
