This week on the high-speed train in Belgium, the Thalys 9364, three American heroes were born. Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone were the three brave men who, on the high-speed train headed from Amsterdam to Paris, were put on alert by a man acting very suspicious and unnerving. The man, later named as Ayoub el-Qahzzani, then went to the bathroom after arousing the suspicion of many passengers.
Sadler, a Kappa Sigma at California State University, was one of the three Americans on the train to hear the distinct sound of a gun being loaded and cocked. Knowing what needed to be done, Sadler, Skarlatos, and Stone resolved to save the train, and countless lives. When the gunman exited the bathroom with his AK-47 drawn, these Americans restored some of our faith in humanity and Greek life as a whole. The gunman was well armed, including a handgun, knife and nine magazines on top of the fully automatic assault rifle. The three men, along with a British man named Chris Norman, confronted the man immediately and disarmed him as quickly as they could, but the carnage didn't stop there. The man pulled out his knife and stabbed at least one of them before finally being taken down. Spencer Stone was hospitalized after his thumb was injured so badly that doctors had some reservations about whether he would even keep the appendage. The operation to reattach it was successful, however, and he has already been released from the hospital in France.
The few good men's journey was not over yet, however, as they received a Medal of Bravery from France for stopping the attack on the train. They received a public reception and were giving a personal 'thank you' from French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, who stated the men were "particularly courageous and showed great bravery in very difficult circumstances." Also, President Barack Obama stated, "All Americans are proud of their bravery and thankful that they stepped in to stop the attack." Finally, the gunman has reportedly been on at least of three European counterintelligence watch lists. To these heroes, the men and women of the University of North Georgia thank you for your good service to the world.
