Communication is one of the only things in this world that brings people together on an interpersonal level. Communications majors will understand this when I say, we get a bad rap for our major, and I have heard too many times that my major is an ‘easy A.’ Let me just ask this one question, what is one thing that every job, role, position will require you to do? I sure hope you said to communicate! (Granted, there are specific fields that I would only let a certified trained individual do.) The vast majority of the work force requires communication to customers, coworkers, employers, and it stretches all the way out to friends, family, and even the people we walk by on the street. Communication is more crucial than most people realize. People are and will always be people who desire to have interpersonal relationships with other people through communication.
There are many channels in which we communicate to one another, and a great communicator can use all of the channels effectively to send their message. Along with that someone that communicate well to others can also be better at decoding messages from other individuals. It is important to understand that every individual has their own unique world view which can alter how that person receives and sends messages. Being a Com Major you always ask questions of people to know more about them or to have that person clarify what they mean.
A consistent and important question that is asked “what will you do with your major?” With a Com Major some people are not sure what this major applies to, and the answer is anything I want to do I can! There are endless possibilities and opportunities for people who know exactly how to communicate effectively and use this skill to present themselves well to others. No matter where I decide to move or work what I learned in college will always be applicable in the future. I did not choose this major as an easy way out, even though to the outward eye it may seem that way. Do not get me wrong I do believe that there are definitely people out there that put so much dedication and heart into their work, such as nursing majors, or pre-med majors, and teaching majors, but I do also believe to be in those fields you should have a calling for it. No one wants a teacher who could care less about their students, or a nurse or doctor that has terrible bedside manner. God gives each individual a unique perspective on the world we live in and it is just as important to understand why we need to communicate between one human being to another as well as saving lives. Communication is at the soul of humanity, and it is what brings each of us unique individuals together.
