Brock Turner is the Sanford rapist who was trending through the media a couple months ago. The public was enraged because the judge sentenced Turner to just 6 months after being caught in the act of raping someone with undeniable evidence. People were outraged because similar cases ended with much shorter jail times. Some people say the judge went easy on him because he's a young, successful swimmer so he has a bright future. The thing is, a rapist shouldn't have a bright future. Brock Turner portrays himself as a victim by talking about how this one mistake ruined his life because even though he didn't go to jail for a long time, his face is everywhere on the internet labeled as a rapist. Well good, he should have some hardships. The girl he raped was physically and is now mentally not at her best. He shouldn't walk away clean like he and the judge think he should. He should be punished. He should've gotten a longer sentence. He didn't accidentally rape her. He can't say it wasn't his fault. He did a bad thing and deserves adequate punishment regardless of how bright his future used to be.
Now you know my opinion on the case as well as the majority of the population's opinion. You've probably heard it all before. Here's why it's relevant today. September 2, 2016, Brock Turner was released after serving a 3 month sentence. He was let out for good behavior. A known rapist who hasn't learned his lesson is on the streets. This court case is detrimental to every man or woman who has been raped because if they didn't talk about it before, they definitely won't want to come forward about it now. Going through all the intense questions commonly associated with rape cases is hard enough. Some people say reliving the rape in court is worse than the actual event because they feel like no one believes them and no one is on their side. They feel alone and judged. Now every victim feels that but even more because they are even more afraid of what the result of a court case could be. Would the trial be worth the result?
I'm not trying to say all men are evil. I know they aren't and the two men who rescued the Sanford girl are proof of that. Not every rape is as violent and scarring as the Sanford case but the fact is that Brock Turner did an evil thing and basically got away with it. If you're looking for more information about the case just google Brock Turner and read any reputable news website. There's a ton of information out there, I encourage everyone to make their own opinion of this case and how it should've ended.
