Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and, honestly, to yourself. College is an imperative time to do so. You’re growing as a person and becoming who you’re going to be. There are so many things that consume your attention while in college and of course they are all important. I am ashamed to admit that for me volunteering has not been one of those things. I strive to be a good student all while having the time of my life, which is not hard seeing as I go to The University of Alabama. It can be hard to find a spare second to devote to something other than your sanity. Schoolwork, social life, extra curricular activities and clubs are all things students share their time between, but one that is overlooked is volunteering. There are a number of ways to give back to the community that you call home and there are opportunities to match a variety of interests. Whether you call Tuscaloosa your home for a short period of time or you’re born and raised there, you should give back.

1. The Center for Service and Leadership

For students it couldn’t be easier to dive into volunteer work. The Center for Service and Leadership is devoted to helping students become involved in the community. From weekly volunteer work like helping at the food bank to bigger events like the Ripple Effect, Volunteer.ua.edu has many volunteer options to choose from that also connect you with students around campus.

2. Animal Shelters

The Humane Society of West Alabama and the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter are both great places to volunteer to help the animals of Tuscaloosa. Volunteering here also provides you with the chance to get to know people around the community outside of campus because people of all ages are welcome to volunteer. Who wouldn’t want to spend time giving some love to animals?

3. Children’s Hands-on Museum of Alabama

Volunteering at the Children’s Hands-on Museum not only has the potential to be a great way to help in your community but it can also go well with your major. If you’re majoring in something like elementary education or early childhood development, this might be a volunteer opportunity of interest for you. And if you’ve ever been to this place, or even just seen the outside of it, you know it would be a fun place to give back.

4. United Way of West Alabama

UWWA is dedicated to bettering the community by improving the welfare of its citizens. Volunteering through UWWA allows you the chance to do a number of different activities that will prove meaningful for those you’re helping. They connect you with an opportunity that is right for you to ensure that you also get something out of the experience.

5. Habitat for Humanity

You don’t have to work on construction to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Although construction is a huge part of what they do, you can also volunteer to help around with non-construction needs. Every volunteer makes a difference no matter where his or her help is given. If you want to help with construction but aren’t sure what you’re doing Habitat for Humanity is happy to take an inexperienced volunteer and show them the way.

If you can find the time, you should volunteer while in college. Even if you can’t make a huge time commitment, you can help by donating money or items to places in need. Another way is to inform those around you of those in need, remind them that there are ways they can give back around the community.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
