Have you decided to try out for a role in a production at your local community theater? Well, give your creative bone a tune-up and read these tips on how to get prepared for the stage.
1. Research.
Learn about the play, characters and read the script if you can get a copy. This will make you more confident in what you're looking for and how to read for the character. Also, double-check in the audition information if you need to prepare a monologue or song beforehand—some directors go this route and you will need to prepare for this ahead of time!
2. Warm up!
Look up some simple vocal warm-ups online and practice them several times before you head out. "Unique New York. New York's Unique. You Know You Need Unique New York" and others similar to this one are great for getting your vocal chords, mouth and face stretched beforehand. Think of it like a sport. You wouldn't want to run a mile without stretching first!
3. Dress to impress.
You don't have to go to your audition in a full tuxedo or floor-length gown, but you should wear nice clothes and avoid shorts, yoga pants or tank tops—unless you are auditioning for a musical—then you should dress to dance and sweat! You want to feel confident in what you're wearing to your audition. Avoid wearing sandals or flip flops. Always wear closed-toed shoes or dance shoes.
4. Do some relaxation exercises.
It's completely normal to get pre-audition jitters, so make sure to do some deep breathing, full-body stretches and practice your monologue, song or material.
5. Smile!
Never forget the importance of smiling and being friendly to everyone you meet at your audition. The director, the stage manager and the other potential cast-members are all people that you want to make a good impression on to improve your success in that theatre.
And remember, the director wants to see you do well! The people casting you aren't there to laugh at you and hope that you fail. They want to see new talent that will wow them! Have fun with your new experience, and do your best!
